2022/23 Nathan Patterson

One thing he did that stood out is when he was in position to cross he did not hit and hope he was looking for a pass to zip into feet. It shows me that he has good vision and is cognoscenti of where the players are in the box. Strikers should love that if he can show it in the league. He won’t have as much time, but it would be a valuable trait if he can carry it over

There's more hope than analysis about this lad form many on here.

In has allotted position he's had one good game since arriving - the derby.

It's all well him having a few good touches when he plays, but the drawback is he cant defend like a PL player should be able to. That makes him almost worthless as a player for us. We have two ahead of him in the pecking order and I suggest we play him further up the pitch if we're to get ANY value from him.

I suspect many more agree too.

Off the top of my head, I thought he played well against Brighton and kept Mitoma quiet. Thought he done pretty well against Man City and Foden, got beat a couple of times but stuck at it and didn’t get overrun. I’m sure there are a number of other games in which he has acquitted himself well, and I’m sure you know that too, if you’ve actually watched the games.

As I said, if he keeps Coleman and Garner out of the RB spot he'll be doing well.

There's no questioning his athleticism, but positionally he's all at sea. It'll cost Everton again if we keep playing him in there. It's something you either have or dont (positional sense).

Move him further up the pitch as a RW or move him on for cash. That would be my conclusion.
I don’t believe it’s his positional sense at all, it’s his attacking instincts that he needs to curb at times, and I believe he’s already adjusting. He wants to play on the front foot, and obviously with Rangers he could do that since they dominate nearly every other team in the league. It’s different at Everton, and he is adjusting.
You have Mykolenko on the other side who has the opposite mindset. He doesn’t want to get forward often enough. As I said give him time to get the balance right and he will be a quality fullback both defensively and attacking.
In my opinion Garner is better in midfield, and if he is to grow as a player that’s where he needs to be played.

You don’t really analyse either though. Make blasé statements like “one good game” which also isn’t true as he had a run of sustained decent performances.

All you ever do is point out his couple of mistakes he might make and attempt to shout louder than everyone else that it supposedly makes him worthless and one of our worst players.

You say he can’t defend like a PL defender. Can you back that up with some stats and real analysis please. Could use fbref to get some of the comparison stats with other PL fullbacks.

He was fantastic against Mitoma. Got caught out once early on but learnt from it and Brighton made more long crosses in our game than I think any other game they played as Mitoma couldn’t get past him.

It’s ok @davek ive done it for you. Comparison compared to full backs in the top 5 leagues and European comps across the last year.

For someone who supposedly can’t defend like a PL defender should, he in in the top 2% for tackles, top 6% for blocks and clearances.

And here is the defensive stats compared to the same criteria but in more depth.

…you need to watch Leeds away last season. Him and McNeil were terrific. For me, that laid any doubts about his application, resilience and desire to defend.

Remember you saying he was a ‘winger’ and not a full back. You said he gets caught upfield. The reality was quickly the opposite which actually surprised me. His game was more about defending than attacking. Watched Scotland concede a breakaway goal and he burst a gut to be the deepest defender back.

Saying that, I’ve been disappointed with him as I expected more. I won’t make excuses. His injury record is a concern and I want to see a more attacking dimension to his play. It will really help playing in a settled back four, with a partner ahead of him. I think he’s a terrific prospect and I get the impression Dyche likes him.

Big season for Patterson.

That's what I've been saying. This season he either sorts himself out and dislodges Coleman or he's no use to us. Garner looks a far better long term replacement for Coleman.
