2022/23 Nathan Patterson

But Patterson has played poorly too? He was poor in the Fulham game after he came on, he was dreadful in some games around the turn of the year. They’re all much of a muchness is the point, pretending Patterson is clearly superior is fine but it’ll likely be proven wrong within a couple of games of coming in again. That’s not a criticism of him, it’s just an assessment of where we’re at. None of them are that good, just because you haven’t seen one player fail as much doesn’t make them better, obviously.

I've watched all of the games Patterson has played in this season and I don't think anyone could realistically call his performances dreadful

Holgate got himself sent off yesterday because he couldn't keep up with the attacker

I'd probably call that pretty dreadful and I can't say Patterson has been anywhere near as bad in any game I've seen him play in nevermind any Everton game

Comments from the night of the Brighton game . The first one that came to mind.
Coleman should be coming on at half time. He is a liability today.

Terrible tonigh. Him and McNeill were constantly out of position and rinsed for fun.

All over the place tonight. Way way out of his depth

Having him injured is probably a blessing he has been horrifc.

Not sure he's even Championship standard, bless him.

Also go to any match thread pre-Dyche and see exactly how much dislikes* Coleman had as he was a mistake machine at the time as Lampard expected him to play football for some reason.

* Putting it mildly, also putting myself in the hate circle as he was absolutely dreadful.

He was crap before the injury and surprise surprise he is crap after the injury and even bigger surprise Dyche wont play him anymore. If Holgate gets a game instead of you, you should think about a new profession!

Every single post...it was boring long ago.

The issue is that the manager is clueless.

I agree with the reasoning behind why Patterson may not be selected, yet I'd argue that we can't and should have relied on Godfrey and Holgate there either.

From my point of view, I suspect it's a mixture of wanting experience, strength and reliability to shore up the defence - he's not been keen on him or Mykolenko.

The issue is that the players he has put into that position appear to lack the adaptability, ability and temperament to play there either, which limits us too.

Right now, our full backs offer very little offer offensively, while being schooled defensively. It ain't good.
The problem is that Sean is more than a bit old school and clearly prefers tried and untrusted to taking a chance on a young players playing in his correct position.

I'm not quite sure how but you seem to be still missing the point. I'm not trying to slate Patterson, or defend Holgate or Coleman or Godfrey. I have said a number of times that if I was picking the team from here i'd have Patterson in it. I'm just saying this narrative of certain decisions being mind boggling is weird. If we were leaving out players who had proven records at this level, or who were impressing every time they got on the pitch, then I would be totally on board with it. We're not though, not by a long chalk.

And so are you - I'd prefer a square peg in a square hole, rather than any of the dreadful players we have that "might" fit just because they have "experience".

"Experience" in failing, saying it again.

Patterson over Godfrey and Holgate (who was resurrected just to remind us he's a terrible footballer) is an absolute no-brainer and it is mind boggling and not a weird conspiracy narrative at all. Really happy to see how both of those experienced footballers shine on the pitch, because we're afraid to play a 20 year old.

I mean my whole point was that I don't believe he's scared to play a 20 year old, just that the 20 year old may not actually be any better, so at least you've confirmed that you didn't understand it if nothing else.

Wonder if Patersons none aapereences had anything to with the ffp.
Difficult to argue that we benefited from purchasing him if doesn’t play
