The dislike for him is insane.

With Patterson we saw the same with Mitoma before. Looks shaky and within the first 30mins youre a little bit concerned.

Then bang, the tables have turned and hes well on top of the situation.

Agreed, improved no end over the game.

Id give him 6/10 but only because the first 20mins was scary lol

101% clearly our best RB. Id give him the season there...no one comes close.

So we loan out our best right back, then what play a 39year old or 35 year old (on the back of serious injury) there?

Not for me, not for me at all.
I realise there is a binary - for or againt legacy to this thread and lads are entrenched.

Im looking at it from the points of view of the lads development and also the best interests of the club.

Hes not our best right back at all, objectively hes targeted in the team as a weak link and he has developmental needs in the art of defending and the full back position in general, we look more vulnerable with him in the team. Thats not a criticism as he hasnt played much senior football at Rangers or here - to be considered an experienced pro. Hes 22 now and he has never played football week in week out, (his peers in Onana, McNeill, Garner, Brathwaite are out progressing him and hes been here longer in the majority), how can he be anything else then what he is, still very inexperienced and needing games to develop.

Coleman and Young will retire and we all want Nathan to be the answer - we will look to him next season, hes clearly not going to be starting over Coleman and maybe even Young when fit.

The opportunity is now for him to get that experience and develop, its next season we will be relying on him and i think its not good for the lad sitting on the bench as injury cover to lads touching 40, when he is crying out for experience of games and defending week in week out and honing his craft. Its good for the lad and good for the club.

Look what it did for Branthwaite.

The binary is simply this:

Those who think he's terrible versus those who think he's slightly less than terrible and feel sorry for him.

Effectively that's the division on this thread.

He has zero/zilch/nada/nowt awareness for the movement of opposition forwards around him and he's almost never there to block or force them to pass elsewhere.

He's the most obvious weak link in our defence I've seen for some years...and that includes Keane at CB and Holgate and Godfrey at RB. That is some competition he's out in front of in the incompetence stakes.

There is a player in there im sure of it mate. But he has clear developmental needs and because of them he's not starting games here. He needs not to be collecting dust as injury cover for near 40 year old's and go out and play games and learn how to be a full back week in week out, his positioning, his decision making and the balance to his game. The lad needs a loan.

If he remains how he is and is our starting full back next season, he and we are really going to struggle.

You know i read expecting to read, he wasnt great. Sums this thread up really.

I thought he wasnt great yesterday, not a great full back performance at all.

The lad needs to go out and play and learn his craft.
Some people back him now because they painted themselves into a corner. It's tribalism of course for some...or something worse. I feel sorry for them because they're left with their inverted prejudice having to hand out support to one of our worst players of the last few years.

They made that bed for themselves and have to lie in it. 🤷‍♂️

I think if we get a transfer embargo he will be. A terrifying thought. Or we hand Coleman a further extension...which I wouldn't rule out under those circumstances.

I've seen enough of him to understand he's never going to be PL class.

For his sake I hope we can get him to a Championship club for some cash and leave him there to find his way in the game at that level.

To be fair the lads been boom and bust he had a good run early season under Lampard. He thrived playing and full tilt we saw a player. Minds were made up then and then it becomes binary.

Its irrelevant really, you have to be open minded, hes struggled for games and to my mind struggled in them when given an opportunity since, we need to look at whats best for him now to develop and the club, the lads needs experience and games in my opinion - go out and enjoy himself and learn. His time is next season and we have a window now to develop him now. He might save us a few bob in the transfer market.

I never saw that, tbh.

I saw him have a good derby one day and thought he might have broken through, but he just kept on coughing up easy points for the opposition.

Theres virtually no upside for us keeping him. Cut our losses and get £7m/£8m from a Championship club next summer if we can.

I think Coleman would stay on in those circumstances to be honest, but hes not a magician either and he deserves us not to e relying on him touching 40.

I think there is a good player in there. But he looks like a youth teamer coming in every time he plays and takes a run of games to build competency. We dont have that luxary and hes clearly marked out as a weak link and his defending is boom and bust. I dont blame the lad hes never really played anywhere, he cant be anthing else. Until hes playng week in week out.

Ah he did mate, he had a good run of games and was improving, early season last season. Hes regressed since.

The lad needs developing in my opinion and he needs games, id send him out in January.
