Not sure on this as it’s not complicated to make sure you get in the six yard box when a cross comes in. He just doesn’t do it. That’s just basic football nous.

I don't disagree - he's never been prolific and it's for reasons like that. The point I'm making really is that even with the flaws in his game like that, he's made himself a useful player in the right set up.

Seems like I'm in the minority here, but I thought he was ok on Saturday me.

Held the ball up well, played it wide nicely a few times, had a header cleared off the line.

The only thing which has been pointed out already that needs work is getting in the box more, the Coleman goal being the best examples your 34 year old full back is bombing on and having to take a shot because no one is in the box ( worked out well in this instance but wouldn't normally )

Mainly asking a player to be Calvert Lewin even though his strengths are the complete opposite.

Yes, he should be in the box. But he's either working the channels, fighting centre backs on long balls, or trying to link play.

He's not athletic enough to do all that. If you want him in the box, you sacrifice another aspect of the game he's meant to play.

He got a standing ovation so don't worry, you're not in the minority. The loud voices in here don't represent the majority of fans.

Problem is that skill deficit, arriving in the box, is a major problem when you are only one of two strikers at the club. Surely any striker, who wishes to play regularly.would have worked to improve that as as a basic skill.

He can't anticipate a cross coming in, this comes natural to any striker, shearer highlighted this on m.o.t.d......i can't figure out what he is.

To be fair, he's never gonna beat a CB in the air. I'm sure the majority of the crosses are aimed at Onana and Douces arriving late. Both had more chances than Maupes because of arriving from deep.

Anything zipped in, yeah he should be there. But unless he's just gonna hang in the box (which to get the best out of him, is whats needed), it's not gonna be the solution with everything else he's been told to do

Did a job he hasn’t got the tools for well imo.

He annoyed and pestered their defence all match, gets stuck in with any handbags looking after his teammates, had a chance cleared off the line and has got a bit of housery in him.

He might not be prolific but he works hard for the team - I quite like him.

Again, he can anticipate crosses coming in. He's scored plenty of goals in the past from exactly that situation. He's not absolutely amazing at it obviously, but he's capable. One 30 second piece on match of the day and suddenly everyone's parroting the exact same opinion, as if Calvert Lewin and Richarlison always used to be gambling on every single cross and burying them all. He's playing as a target man and he's not suited to it. He's probably having to think about what he's doing a bit more instead of just doing what comes naturally to him, which no doubt has an impact on his ability to get on the end of things. He's been poor this season and he'll never be a world beater, but he is a competent PL striker who is having a lean time of it - it happens.

I mean he literally had a header cleared off the line in the last game. This is the type of thing I mean, this weird insistence that he hasn’t set foot in the box since he signed. Again I’m not trying to argue that he is or has been great, just that he really is a striker who over his career has a pretty decent track record of scoring goals.
Yes he also scuffed a shot that went straight at the keeper could say he saved it off the line too he needs to put it in the net

I spoke to someone the other week who has a minor role at a fairly low level club and his throwaway opinion was Everton could have done worse than picking up a big raw strong lower level championship or league one type striker just to give us the option of playing the target man for minimal outlay . Watching maupay at the weekend give us what was effectively just hard work with no particular goal threat and no out ball through pace or height I could see the logic of the comment .

Hopefully maupay can get himself in the box and get on the end of something Saturday and that could really boost his confidence.
Yes for a change we’ve had some decent service go into the box in recent games and think he should be gambling front post runs and generally being in better positions he’s very flat footed
