This is the email I sent and received from Everton at the start of May:

Dear Mr. Sharkey

Thank you for your e-mail.

As our fans have come to expect, we are consistently looking at ways to develop and progress the Club.

Fans know that our work is diligent and consultative.

They also know that we will update them, on all matters, as soon as we can. We will remain true to both principles.

Regards,

Everton Football Club

Subject: Rumoured new badge

Hi,

I am shocked and horrified to learn about the change in the Everton crest.

This new “design” is horrendous. Our motto and laurels must stay. They symbolise the success of our great club and this current management team have absolutely no mandate from, or confidence of, our fanbase to make such a decision.

I could design a better, more modern badge in c.25mins in Adobe Illustrator. This design is shocking. No decision of such paramount importance can be made without consultation of those with a lifelong vested interest in the design - the fanbase.

What next, a change to a red strip like Cardiff F.C? This change of badge without consultation reeks of the arrogance of the current management of our club to make decisions on our behalf. It is our club.

Please accept my apologies if this is only a rumour, however I felt I had to make my feelings known before disaster occurred, and believe me this new design would be exactly that.

Regards

You know, i wouldn't mind it if we removed the motto, or even the laurels, but at least make the tower look like a tower and not an overweight tiger striped pencil with a beehive in it. And the rest of the badge is fat, too.

I'm just not really sure what anyone can do about it mate. Unless someone approaches fans groups saying they've got £100million to buy out Bill and rebuild the club for the next 100 years, nothing will change, as much as we think this is our club, on paper, we all know it's not. Which is a bit crap.

I understand what your saying mate but the fact we have no money doesn't mean the board have to alienate the fans at every opportunity, I always think back to the Villareal game when they let every season ticket holder buy 4 tickets, there was murder. I just think any business of this size should work with there customers, we seem to do the complete opposite.

The fact they released it on a bank holiday weekend, when it may be a little more unnoticed, backed up with all the media to try and justify the change showed they knew there would be a reaction. I would have more respect for them if they came out and said 'our hands are tied because of nikes manufacturing process, but we cannot turn down the revenue'. At least then we can understand it, at the moment there is no reason for such a drastic change which is quite bizarre .

Calm down mate.

Unless you're a wannabe North Korean dictator you'd have to admit that poll is flawed in the sense it was either 'Like It' or 'Hate It'. Instead it should have been 5 options from love to like, through neutral to dislike and then hate.

Not really pal. It warranted a decisive answer.

But, ToffeeWeb ran a poll with tiered options 11k votes. 94% still didn't like/hated it. http://www.toffeeweb.com/fans/poll/new-badge.php

Absolute nonsense. Everton is a business, and like any other business if you hit them in the pocket they have to adapt their business model to cushion the impact.

But as a business this idiotic decision has been made with such haste that in all likelihood a tonne of kits and merchandise have already been produced

Doesn't matter if they're not purchased by the consumer.

If Evertonians vote with their wallet, this thing goes away - maybe not in time for this season, but definitely for next.

People talk of kit partners etc. Believe me, if sales fall through the floor, Kitbag/Nike will be leading the charge for something to be done about it.

Can't stress it enough; if you hate this badge, don't buy anything with it on. Do as Muggins has; buy the old kit to make the point, save yourself some money and wear a better kit in the process. They have analytics on merchandise sales so they'll get the point.

Having just found out the designer of the badge is a Liverpool fan I am absolutely gobsmacked. There again, this Kenwright regime is capable of anything, and they couldn've give a damn what the fans think. Another round of applause for Bill when he gets shown on the big screen? I just wish he'd sell up, he's the biggest Kopite of them all, single-handedly killing our club.

GET LOST YOU STUPID CART.

There are a handful of clubs that have redesigned their badges over the last 10 years or so. It seems to follow a similar pattern each time, with initial complaints that peter out to nothing, and everyone just moves on. Look at the outcry about the change to the RS badge last year. The club will just ride it out and sail on if history is to repeat itself like it normally does. Catastrophic merchandise sales might change things though.

Come August I suspect everyone will be focusing on whoever the new manager is, not the badge. Unless there is a strong and sustained boycott of merchandise and some public protests e.g. Everyone holding up placards with the old badge on it at the match, the new one will be here to stay.

Missing the point massively. It's not an attempt at fan power at all, like people are "raging against the machine" for the fun of it or something.

Look at the poll results and the instant hatred of this badge - people genuinely hate it. The petitions and protests are natural evolution of that disgust.

People don't need to protest at Goodison - all it takes is for people not to buy it. And every Blue I've spoken to are not going to buy anything with this badge on - and that includes rational 50+ dads with kids, mums, teenagers, the lot. Hell, politicians, club legends etc. are expressing their dismay too.

You wouldn't have a 99% negative response rate on this poll and 15,000 signatures on an online petition if this rebrand was a success. Don't try to make out like it's a minor bunch of internet loons protesting for the fun of it, it's disingenuous.

i promise i won't buy any merch with this badge on. hope other people keep their promise on such a matter as well. get these rookies out of our club ffs

My effort, working largely to brief, keeping the word Everton and "1878" inside the badge:

Or, if for some reason they needed it more compact (no idea why but anyway...), something like this but better done:

Just so people can't accuse me of moaning without offering an alternative, and that was 10 minutes on Photoshop...
