It does not look cheap. There is a difference between looking cheap and being simple.

When a product is cheap to make it makes it more attractive/profitable for other companies to use the badge. of course they will have to pay royalties for this.

It does look cheap though and that's because, while they've tried to make it simple and therefore profitable, they've used too many colours, should've used three absolute maximum.

Plus the kerning on the text is too tight, though it would've helped had they used a lighter font, that one is far too heavy which, for the size they've used, has forced the crest shape to widen.

Design rant over.

the man from del monte might say yes

but on the everton badge we all say hell no !
any person involved in the process of this badge being changed made designed and given the green light need sacking shooting run out of the club and should be ashamed of themselves.
as i said the other day , my guess is this monstrosity is going to be an oversized beast on the kits (so the kits are certain to also be failures now too ) . like a fisher price nike brand for people who need cork on the end of there forks to emsure they dont stab themselves in the eye and who have to be told not to eat plasticine .
if this is the badge they think 'was best' , who the feck are they gonna pick as manager ? i despair :(

Not being funny here, I would actually like to see how you would have done it.

Oh I don't necessarily think I could design a wonderful new crest, but considering I'm only just finishing my college Graphic Design course, and this designer has actually done all that and is a professionally, paid, established designer, he should be creating things that are wayyyyyy out of my league, but in this case I don't really feel he has.

BvB...EFC...if we're comparing our crest to the world's best here's an inspiration..simple too

Yup. There's a reason why the name was never inside the crest. As it is, it makes a "fat arse" style bubble at the bottom half.

You cover that up, the top half is tolerable but still a problem (the square on either end have been shortened). But the bottom, rather than being round, as an hourglass roundness that doesnt suit it. Rather than curved, its a bubble.

And the tower to me is too cluttered for a "minimal" design.

if it was just some branding exercise limited to the packaging of merchandise etc I could live with it. As the sole symbol of our club it is rubbish. The essence of being an Evertonian is the idea of STRIVING for nothing but the best in every element of the club. The fact that we fall well short of that on lots of occasions is immaterial. Those who understand need no explanation. Those who dont.......seem to be in charge of the club. Everyperson in the world who sees our badge should HAVE to ask what do those words mean so they hear the answer and begn to understand what this club is meant to be about.

From the Coventry Evening Telegraph, January 15th, 2005:

Byline: EVENING TELEGRAPH COMMENT

FANS of Coventry City were celebrating today after winning their battle to save the football club's badge.

The board of directors announced last night that a new design would be scrapped in the wake of an unprecedented protest from supporters.

The climbdown produced the biggest cheer so far this season from the terraces - a resounding victory for the people who really matter, the fans themselves.

Hundreds of them had written to the Evening Telegraph in protest. Thousands more had voted against the new badge on our website.

The Evening Telegraph is proud to have supported their protest. And today we congratulate them.

But we also give credit to club chairman Mike McGinnity and his fellow directors. Yesterday we urged the board to listen to the protest, and that is exactly what they did. The directors were man enough to admit they got it wrong and, despite the cost involved, this controversial new club emblem is today where it belongs - in the waste paper bin.

We say well done to the fans for standing up and making their views known. And we thank Coventry City Football Club for taking notice.

This is a victory for the diehard supporters, who support the club through good and bad. But it is also a victory for common sense.

The lesson to be learned for the directors of Coventry City and every other football club is clear.

The lifeblood of any club is the fans - they are the people who really matter.
All of that could easily apply to us.

Will the Liverpool Echo be supporting any fans protest do you think?
