Remember though, we lost Steve Tashjian, which was a major loss. I think he left at RM's first season. Fitness levels went to pot then.
It is said to frustrate some players that Martinez is too soft when the misfiring team is crying out for the tough discipline his predecessor used to administer. ‘The team had a fighting spirit that seems to have disappeared,’ said one insider.

And yet here’s the thing. Players supposedly wanting Martinez to get tough were then heard to complain about a training trip to Qatar last week. It was all work and no play. Double sessions. No real down time. ‘Boring,’ was one verdict, even if it was followed by that win at Selhurst Park.

The players were said to be less offended than they perhaps should have been when Kevin Mirallas decided to relieve Leighton Baines of the penalty-taking duties against West Brom last month, only to miss.

But it was also noted that Martinez did not confront Mirallas at half-time, mainly because the Belgian forward never appeared in the dressing room having instead dived into the treatment room and declared himself unfit to play the second half.

Let's take a step back and think logically.

Firstly who is avaliable and a realistic target?

-Galtier. Looks to already be on way to Nice.
-Moyes. Agreed West ham deal. His return frought with controversy anyway.
-Benitez. Controversial and fanbase splitting.
-Poch. Very difficult to do and still in a new job at PSG.
-Howe. Not good enough and no real substance. Viable option.
-Potter. In a job and would likely split fanbase. However a viable option.
-Fonseca. Avaliable. Never managed in England but an option. On way to spurs tho.
-Rangnick. In a job. Been a DOF for much of career. Difficult to prise.
-Martinez. Controversial. In a job in middle of tournament.
-Nuno. Avaliable. Managed in league. Would have been seen as a coup 12 months ago. Viable.

Your then left with managers either in jobs such as Dyche who would jump at the chance or managers such as Rodgers who are not viable.

Then it's dregs such as Bilic, Hughes etc.

There are obviously other managers out there but I can't name any who is likely to fit the bill. I don't think there is a single appointment which everyone woukd agree on that is realistic or viable.

If we had got Nuno after Silva we would have been ecstatic. He's had a torrid 12 months at Wolves with injures, covid, family issues and a unsettled season. His time looked naturally coming to an end and that it's likely he took them as far as he can go with them. Which was the championship to a solid Premier league team, taken some big scalps home and away, reached Europe twice and got far.

I think logically he is the most sound appointment when you consider availability etc.

It’s not a myth. Martinez was better because he had Moyes players rather than his own.

However, he is doing a decent job with Belgium and people saying he’s flopped there are talking nonsense unless they bomb this tournament (unlikely)

I have already shown how its a myth though! The best performers that season where players who Martinez either signed or brought into the team. I don't even see how that's debatable to be honest.

I don't have any dog in this fight at all by the way. I just like to be a purveyor of truth and like to question stuff that gets peddled a lot that has no real basis in truth (for example my anger when people say Carl Tiler was crap...)

I still fancy France to be honest. Belgium's defence looks a bit ropy on paper at least.

Not used to seeing such well reasoned, articulate posts on here. Will done, Sir - you've perfectly expressed why I'm not bursting a vein in my head with this appointment.

But it was all based on Moyes’ defence. Plus Stones who Moyes didn’t sign just for the bantz. Martinez has never ever shown he can organise a defence.

Anyway, more important things in the world as events tonight have highlighted.

Good post. I wanted the split fan base potter. I love his approach to good football.
But im certainly not anti nuno. Few little alarm bells like one key injury and it seemed to collapse. Losing jota aswell. Thats two big hits.
But his management career isnt that shabby. Not a huge fan of the football but hey ho.
Plus i dont think he'll suffer a few at this club who have took the right p!ss in the past few years.
Not excited by it. But def get behind him.

Well reasoned, I don't think it shifts my sense of being underwhelmed by his appointment totally but I can see the logic of your argument.
