Perception is an interesting thing.

Why would you much prefer Nuno to Howe or Potter realistically? Nuno has managed better clubs and got better positions but Howe and Potter have taken their clubs up 4 divisions and into respectable top flight teams. Which is the most impressive achievement? Rhetorical question as it's all relative really. What I would say is that all 3 have done impressive jobs at various levels. It does make me laugh how much managers get dismissed.

I think its easier for managers like Howe and Potter to do well in the lesser divisions shall we say as a lot of clubs play dour prehistoric football so if you are a good coach that can get your team playing attacking football you are half way there imo.

The problem I think is when they reach the PL they then still play that way with lesser players against teams like Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs etc who are just simply stronger and they dont have a Plan B nor the finances/pull to bring in CL quality players who can still play that attacking football but to a higher level if that makes any sense.

For me teams like us only get better by being disciplined and tough to beat and going from there if you can finish in Europe and bring in better players you can slowly evolve your team - Leicester went from a contain and counter with Vardy/Mahrez to a now more possession based team with Maddison, Tielemans, Barnes etc.

I think going straight to a Potter with players like Sigurdsson, Slomes, Iwobi etc is asking for trouble whereas if someone like Nuno or even Galtier who doesn't play swashbuckling football btw can make us compact but do what Carlo couldn't and have us transitioning from defence to attack i.e counter attack much better / quicker I think thats our best chance of "relative success" of say 6th-7th as I don't think we are good enough for anything higher or to win a trophy at present.

I've no evidence to support this - but you do have to wonder whether we need to significantly tighten the purse-strings following/during Covid & with stadium work needing to be paid for & we failed to get to Europe. Could be part of the reason Ancelotti left (sure...and it's Real Madrid) and why we may not be able to entice a top manager who would demand top players.

Ie. the first interview question might be 'can you work with these players, youngsters and a limited budget ?'
I don’t know. It’s constantly been bandied around that we have FFP issues and funds are limited yet Moshiri has consistently backed managers in the market. I’d be more inclined to believe the rumours that Brands wouldn’t sanction the type of signings that Ancelotti wanted rather than that there was no money to improve the squad.

Potter and Howe need to prove themselves a bit more before taking on a job the size of Everton IMO. We were in a very different place when we hired Moyes in terms of finances and expected league position.

Leaving aside the aberration that was Big Sam, Koeman had gotten Southampton to a 5th place finish, Bobby had won the FA Cup with Wigan and Ancelotti has the best CV since Moses……….

Hmm. I think it's to be Nuno. Too much chatter from day dot.

But, I've got a niggling feeling about Roberto Martinez.

Likely leaving Belgium post Euros, has a known and amicable working relationship with Kenwright and Moshiri and importantly, plays a clear and defined system very much suited to the technical South American and Dutch types Brands likes to scout.

He seems to have learnt a fair bit as Belgium have looked a very well structured and defensively organised side the three times I've watched them recently.

I reckon he's closer to the job then some on here might have considered. If they whittled the shortlist down to three, I reckon he'd be on it.

Hmm. I expected Carlo to fix our midfield this Summer and never doubted his judgement. I know who I'd trust out of Ancelotti and Brands.

I'd certainly consider it credible he would be a candidate, but timing is the issue. You would expect Belgium to be involved in the latter stages of the tournament and they certainly wouldn't countenance an announcement on Martinez' future whilst that is the case. Which would leave the job unfilled by the end of June and potentially into July when pre-season training has started. People are already losing their heads waiting. The time to do it would be haven been before the tournament.

If he does leave Belgium I'll think he'll take time out and do some punditry / technical scouting of his own. There will always be offers later in the season from clubs in crisis.

and shock horror the 'its not on and someone else is being considered' lines are coming out. I don't think it's him, problem is reports are saying Rafael.

You all know that its been made out that the Nuno talks have stalled, and the Rafael links are happening, to make people feel better when Nuno is appointed dont you lol But been honest only Everton could mess around like no other team doing something that supposedly looked done going by the press last week
