Exactly. Next summer (or christ, possibly even before) one of the giants will sack their manager and come knocking, and there'd be a Conte-shaped hole in the Finch Farm wall.

There is a world that makes sense for Conte which essentially goes something like this;
1) Ancelotti made quick improvements to the team (around 20% points total)
2) If Conte can get close to that, or even say a 13/4% increase in a season it would be great
3) Most of the improvement will be immediate
4) A 13/14% Increase gets us 67 points and probably CL.
5) If he leaves at the end of the season, with another pay out for us, happy days.

That's a best case scenario really. The worst case scenario is it starts to go badly wrong as he runs out of ways to motivate an average group of players and his ideas stop working.

Conte was never remotely in the picture. We are not his kind of club.Aii this rubbish about Nuno being a diversion while they really aim to get Conte. Cut out the fantasy and back their choice which does appear to be Nuno. The bit about prolonged negotiations is a bit intriguing. It might be the size of his entourage, Carlo the Rat had seven after all. Maybe Nuno sees no role for Ferguson which has held things up.

From a quick scan, 67pts would have only gotten CL in 3 out of the last 10 seasons.

Now granted, 2 of those 3 are the last two seasons, but I think a lot of that is down to covid, and can't necessarily assume following seasons would be like that.

Not many at the moment. That's the only reason we'd have any shot at getting him through the door. The problem is (as I said above) that in 6, 12 or 18 months max, one of those huge sides will bin their manager and he'll be off.
Totally agree, we need a longer term commitment and prospect but I would be excited to see him in our Dug Out with a nice big Transfer Kitty to get us up there but like most of us, totally fed up with the constant merry go round we see ourselves on with little to show for it and dont wanna be in the same position in 18 months time.

Of course if we can tie him down to some ridiculous restrictive contract, then he would be a yes for me. Not gonna happen though!

You see, I think it's part of a wider trend where we have gone from 4 to 6 dominant teams to now having 1 or 2 with the rest being a bit more inconsistent, and sides 7-12 getting a lot better.

If you go back to the last 20-25 years I bet about half the time you are getting CL with 67. If you're not in the CL you are knocking on the door and comfortably in the top 6.

That's the upside benefit though. The downside risk would be large too and probably bigger than a Nuno (who I don't massively want either haha!).

Interesting day. Seems NES playing hardball and/or exaggerating the extent of progress in discussions through his own contacts.

Definitely think there is a narrowing window beyond which he will drop out if not appointed. If they aren't inclined to accomodate his demands, they are not sold on him.

After that, it could be anyone. We have had Allardyce and Ancelotti here.
