He has managed big teams though, the small club thing doesn’t bother me to much, in the dark times of the 90s and early 2000s did we act like a big club?. Money was always an issue and Moyes did great with little of it. Now that isn’t the case the backing is there financially to make us a proper big club. Imo Benitez is the best of a average bunch of managers available, I’d have liked us to take a risk and given it to Dunc, but if that isn’t the way I’d prefer Benitez over, potter,Howe,Nuno and who ever else has been mentioned.
Couldn't agree more. We've had 5 years as a very wealthy club albeit operating under a FFP system that Chelsea and Man City got in early enough to avoid or circumvent and really I feel just as frustrated about the Blues as i did when we didn't have much dosh at all. We thought Carlo was the answer but his actions a couple of weeks ago showed that when push came to shove he didn't have much class at all. There may have been family pressure in the background to leave but to have led 3/4 of a city up a garden path stating his love for the club, appreciation of the fan base and history, eagerness to build a competitive team and lead us into a new stadium told me that he really didn't care for any of that. I intensely disliked Benitez when he was across the park but I know that he is a very very good manager and importantly, settled on Merseyside. I think he does have integrity and really only left the Toon when he realised there was little or no financial support to match his ambition. I've said it before on this forum, but living in the south having moved down here in my 20s, Everton around the country are just not perceived as fashionable. I've even had southerners tell me that world-class players and managers will never sign for Everton despite the fact that they have signed for City. Benitez was my choice last time and I will be delighted if he is appointed. I understand the anger but ultimately he faced a similar challenge at Chelsea and led them to trophies. He is the best choice at the moment as most of the others would be high risk. At least Benitez understands football on Merseyside, the psyche of the people and hopefully what Evertonians demand of their team. He is high profile enough to attract top players and also to make sure the media cannot ignore us. At the risk of being shot down, I hope it happens and if it does we should all just get behind the manager and team and help the man get this club back on the map.

That's a pretty fair point. Leadership is not always about doing what everyone wants, but about evaluating the options and making the right call. If he makes the right call and Benitez is successful the fans will soon come around. The process has to be, get the right person in, and the fans will come on board, as opposed to, find the person fans want and then wait for them to be successful.

There are a couple of issues attached with this though. Firstly what makes Benitez the right call? And will this be communicated properly to supporters? Front up a bit if you're on the board. Secondly, if you get those big calls wrong, as a leader, pretty quickly you lose respect from other stakeholders. I'd probably say that is where Moshiri is now. This isn't his 1st big call, and it's not his big call he has got wrong. I'd also say, he seems to make decisions without doing the necessary diligence (or so it appears).

But look, we finished within 8 points of the CL last season and got over the double the points of the side relegated (31 points more). That gives an indications of the priorities. If he feels Benitez can close that gap next season, he should make the appointment without thinking about it. Fans will soon follow. The question is, do we believe Benitez will be able to do that?

My own opinion is I think if we appoint Benitez Moshiri has reflected on the last 5 or so years and realised that he got shut of Alladyce too quickly due to fan pressure when in reality Alladyce did a better job based on the squad he had to work with than all of Martinez, Silva, Koeman and Ancelotti.

He's probably reached the point where he's thought "im the bloke spending the dough and every manager ive appointed to keep you happy has failed costing me millions so we are getting someone in who I think will steady the ship whilst BMD gets built".

I still think its paper talk and a left field appointment could very well happen.

Blue circle | "The Everton Board of Directors spoke with Christoph Galtier regarding the vacant Everton position before it was offered to Rafael Benitez.

Galtier wanted all of his coaching staff but Bill Kenwright didn't want Duncan Ferguson to lose so talks broke down."

If true, that is an absolute joke!

I read that they were fine with the coaching staff, but they weren't prepared to give him time off to film the next series of The Great British Bake Off

The boards job is to appoint the best fit for the current squad of players mate.

This idea that they should be appointing someone who the fans "like" is exactly the sort of nonsense why we have failed post Moist.

"Oh that Martinez won an FA Cup fans will have him"

"Oh that Silva plays good football the fans will be made up with him"

"Oh that Carlo is a massive name the fans wont boo him no siree"

I dont necessarily want Benitez but at present he's the best of an average bunch when you see the likes of Howe, Potter, Lampard, Big Duncs names banded around.

Nuno and Galtier are the only two outside of Conte that wouldnt be so divisive and one of those wants his own staff which jobs for the boys Kenwright wont accept and the other hasn't been approached and has only done well in France which is a sub par league minus 3 or so sides.
Good take this - if the board thinks Benitez is their man they should crack on with it. If he wins footie matches the fans will come round. The managerial market looks distinctly poor at the moment and no candidate would be met with universal acclaim.

I’d prefer a younger coach to help build something longer term but I can see why Benitez is attractive to the board.

Pandering to the perceived feelings of the fans will end in tears as moshiri will end up appointing someone he doesn’t wholly want and will end up getting rid at the first sign of choppy waters

I didn’t grow up in Liverpool getting stick from RS fans every day so easy for me to say, but-

I think we’re playing into the small club/little brother mentality if we allow his RS ties to discount him.

we’ve said on here many times that the People’s Club sentiment stuff only goes so far and we have to be “ruthless” in moving on loyal servants of the club if it means putting a better side on the pitch.

So here we are, let’s get on with it.

If Rafael is the best on the merits as a coach, or the least-bad if you prefer, then get him. So what if he was a Red. If we’re not considering him for that reason then we’re harming ourselves.

FWIW I’m good with Rafael on the merits. I’d be interested in Ten Hag but Rafael has the track record.

my concern is that this is Moshiri and not Brands. If Brands is to have the title and the board seat then give him his working budget to hire a manager snd let him do it. Let him do his job. One bad general is better than two good ones etc.

TBF I think most sane people’s objections are that he fairly obviously isn’t the best on his merits as a coach; in fact he’s probably the least deserving (based on recent performance) of any of our previous managers.

Its called not being narrow minded.

Having a pop at fellow blues is being called narrow minded? Really?

What you (and others) are doing is being egotistical, almost narcissistic.

"Me and my massive unnarrow minded brain see no problem in employing Rafael Benitez so why should anyone else have an issue?"

Not seeing the issues this appointment would cause is incredibly narrow minded, but keeping having a pop at those fans.

lol nah

What a horrible thread. Hope the club make a decision so we can move on, regardless of who it is, this is the first time ever i'm going into a season with absolutely no optimism. I genuinely cant be arsed with the whole false dawn thing again.
