Genuine question as a older chap

Back in the day if we had appointed or been linked to Bill shankey after he left Liverpool would he be as devisive given his comments and one liners over his time

Given how he was welcomed by the board as a guest numerous times and even to bellied to watch training
Different times, pre Emlyn Hughes, pre Heysel. Also no internet then.Back then,we would have moaned about it in school or the pub and that would have been that. Now of course everyone has an opinion and can tell the whole world that their opinion is the truth at least 20 times a day.

I'm just hoping the plan is to appoint Benitez as 'a safe pair of hands' for a couple of seasons and hope to get some European footie along the way. I'm hoping that having someone like him in, although not showing a great deal of ambition, will allow us to get our shat together and have a clear plan and build towards a footballing identity.
Let Brands get rid of the deadwood and replace with younger, hungrier players that fit a philosophy that we want moving forwards. Benitez to have very little say in transfers. Then replace him with a coach that is a better fit.
Things don't change overnight and it doesn't often end well when managers try to change too much too soon. With the squad we have, playing quick, attacking footie and pressing high probably wouldn't end well..we just don't have the players.

Probably giving the board too much credit thinking they have a plan like that in place though.
so just tread water for 3 seasons?

So let me ask this question mate:

If the choice is Benitez who could say get 7th and us back into Europe or Scott Parker who has us 13th in the table who you would pick?

Because contrary to common belief I dont believe we have agents of world class managers like Conte and Poch knocking down our door wanting this job - only for the owners to say "nah m8 you're alright we dont want a top level manager who the fanbase will love and respect us for bringing in we want that fat ex kopite fella who the fans will hate us for bringing in" that makes no sense therefore its not likely to be the case.

Whether people like it or not Benitez is probably the best manager currently available therefore by saying you would want a lesser manager and as a consequence a greater chance of Everton doing badly because "at least he aint an ex Red" isn't being a supporter in my opinion its just petty tribalism.

And if we sack him a few games in good luck when someone like eddie Howe ends up his replacement oh well eee aint a RS doh.
But he’s a Shoite ‘has been’ manager, that’s why he IS available.
We need to be poaching a good manager, that’s what those highly paid, ‘in the business’ people like Brands are supposedly doing.
Grabbing the nearest, most available name regardless that he’s a rat is not the answer or he’d be in finch farm by now, putting up pics of him and stevie g together

Not gonna lie, it's a No to Rafael but you kinda have to admire his bottle for doing this.

Gonna be a very hard ride for him here. The first stray pass of the season and the fume will descend on him. Regardless of what he wants and the reasons the board want him in.....It's just not going to work. Liverpool would never hire an ex Everton manager.

Wreaks of Smol Cloob syndrome all this. But Jesus Christ, Rafael has thick skin that holds his Spanish, restaurant sized testicles.

YNWA RAFFIE GEE LAD!
True this, shows arrogance and strength of character, maybe we need some of that, Carlo didnt have the heart, Silva was weak, Martinez was useless, if he is strong he might not put up with players being so weak and un fit

The thing is, I don't think people believe this is true...
There are other managers available whose methods are more progressive, who are hungry to win and who have a track record of success in the last ten years. Some of these managers will not drive a wedge between the fans, and between the fans and the board. Some of these managers will not bring a defensive style to the club. Some of these managers will not make the club difficult to whole heartedly support.
I really believe that is the issue

Great post, so many other options.

Benitez to me screams a real lack of ambition and zero understanding of the fans & club from Moshiri/Uzzi/board.

If they are worried about just stabilsing the club, as some have suggested (personally I don't think we need stabilising), there are better options to the fsw out there, if they could be arsed to look.

Is he though?

China is a mad one so I cant comment on that - the Newcastle one didnt he take over with like 10 games to go and had to play about 4 of the top 6 + Leicester or some mad fixture list like that?

He didnt keep them up but stuck around and took them back up the following season and finished 10th & 13th. Nothing special but at the same time that Newcastle squad is garbage & some people want Potter who had Brighton 16th last season with a much better side than what Benitez had at Newcastle.

Moyes got relegated with Sunderland and has just finished 6th with WHU.

Carlo Ancelotti has just finished 12th & 10th with a much better Everton side yet was lauded by much of the fanbase.

Agree, that record is hardly going to make us top 4 or 6 even. He’s out of date and that’s why he had to go to China, no one else went in for him
