New Everton Stadium

You can't really put us in a bracket with the London clubs though, that's a city with about 9 million inhabitants and an almost endless supply of tourists. Seats will be filled in those stadiums because there'll always be tourists happy to take in a game and businesses buying corporate seats. Liverpool has nothing like that sort of demographic, so we have to be careful.

I've said before, i'm not against 60k+, I just think it's childish to stomp our feet and say we need it because someone else has got it. Realistically, the difference we would see between a 57k and 61k stadium is nil, and yet loads of people would say 57k is 'small time'. It's just weird in my opinion.

It's not weird at all, it's a question of perception. If, as you say, "loads of people" see 57k as small time, then that's quite relevant isn't it.

Correct. And yet Spurs got 43k the other week for a league game. They're in the CL every year now with a very competitive team. Maybe it's not as easy to sell out big stadiums as people think.

Not at all, no. It’s childlike logic to think like that, it’s just a number plucked out of thin air because it’s a nice round figure, other than that it serves no purpose whatsoever. It’s like saying we’re only being ambitious if we spend £100m in the summer.

I’m not sure why there’s such a big emphasis on ‘selling out’ anyway. More people want to see big games that’s just a fact if we are selling out run of the mill league games it just means that we didn’t build it big enough and we are turning away a load of people at big games who may have wanted to attend it.

If we get 60k, great but it's not the end of the world if it's a lower capacity. Just design the stadium to be easily extended if needed.
I'd far prefer for the club to work within it's means rather than go 'oh, look at city and west ham, lets break the bank to save face lads'

That's all well and good but have you considered the possibility that some Liverpool fans might post mean jokes about our stadium capacity on Twitter?

it's april 2023, we're out of both cups and sitting 8th in the league with CL out of the picture, we have 3 home games against Bournemouth, Brighton and Norwich. I honestly can't see us filling a 60k stadium for those games. Or Europa games against unpopular European teams or lower league league cup opponents.

We're gambling on the team having made the step up to regular CL level. It's a pointless gamble because if we do make that step up, we can extend the stadium (I presume)

Spot on. I think this has come from Elstone. Certainly his mindset has influenced Meis that the stadium should be "intimate" and full. There seems to be a focus on making sure the stadium is sold out (as it is now) so still has a demand for tickets. It's definitely in my opinion a lack of belief that we can fill a larger stadium, something which a few of our fans also share.

There might be games when there is a lower crowd than say a 60,000 capacity. So what?
For the general games that there may be less, er, what are the club doing for the Newcastle and Watford games? What did they do for the League Cup games?

Just read a good article https://andycostigan.wordpress.com/2018/11/18/sixty-grand-sixty-grand-bramley-moore-dock/
Worth a read.

If they have contingency to extend them great. Often though it seems that extensions are even more expensive than just building it in the first place. If we’ve had a rubbish season why does it mater if we fill the stadium? By your own logic if we fill a stadium in the scenario you’ve just laid out then if we were flying in the league had European football and huge home games then we would literally be leaving millions of pounds on the table every single game just so we had a full house for our worst case scenario?

People need to get over this fear of empty seats. The big stadiums in Europe are empty all the time but they have the capacity to host the biggest events.

They could win that league playing every game behind closed doors. City are winning leagues in empty stadiums and are still looking to expand. Matchday revenue is still a key part of income to allow us to buy top players to allow us to compete with the top teams in our league. If people are happy with us earning less than these sides on every single matchday then sure let’s go for a smaller stadium.

What is the difference per year for an extra 5k for a season? I would be shocked if it is more than 1 or 2 league places in prize money which can be made up through having a more intimate/intimidating stadium which would improve our home record

I don't have a fear of empty seats, they'd be in the gods anyway.
I do have a fear of the club over reaching and living beyond it's means.
The extra 5k seats (from 55 to 60) would be the most expensive to build and offer the least return.
I'd far prefer that the money needed to get to 61,878 was spent on future proofing the stadium so that one day we might even go to 70k if needed
