According to the Design & Access Statement addenda in the planning docs the Leitch pattern wasn't only dropped to simplify manufacture and make cost savings (although clearly that's a factor and benefit). Feedback after the initial application was that the facade needed simplifying as it was too busy, so they made the pattern larger, dropped it from the mesh, and got rid of the thinnest brick pillars. Definite improvement IMO.I think it’s now a uniform perforation, from memory.

As you say, it was going to continue the Leitch pattern across the gaps between the brickwork, but it was one of the things they simplified so there could be an element of standardisation in manufacturing (and hence cost saving).
As for what - if anything - is going behind it, who knows? I don’t think we’ve had a clear answer on that.
