New York

Last time I went was with the girlfriend, absolutely loved it. But when I go back in October it'll be with the lads for a few nights - so likely to be a different outlook. Any recommendations on some good areas for nightlife?

Also, this sounds daft, but I must admit I struggled a little with the tipping lark, I mean I've been to other places in the States and not had a problem but with NYC prices I wasn't too sure. Never wanted to insult a waiter/waitress/bar tender but didn't want to over pay either...any 'tips'?
The tax is 9%. So, look at it on your bill, double it, and that's the tip.

I love the States, but Miami just doesn't feel very American. It's primarily Hispanic.

What should "american" feel like?

As i posted before ive only been to nyc once during the financial crisis and it was "deserted"...went down to wall street and water street for work and literally empty streets, restaurants and bars in the area...so i have no idea how it is usually...even 5th avenue was quiet when we went through in a cab....times square at night was just loads of drug dealers lol

I posted this in an NYC thread about 2 years ago and because I'm lazy I'm C&Ping most of it again (because of the touristy bits it's all still relevant).

I have worked in Manhattan (UWS, Chelsea, West Village and now Midtown East) since I got here 8 years ago and there's plenty to do, but I've also lived in Brooklyn that entire time and love it just as much if not more, but for different reasons. If you ever fancy "slumming it" with the plebeians let me know that too and I can give you more tips.

These are 5 touristy things to do in NY

1. Brooklyn Bridge:
Best to do this one around (ish) sunset. Lovely Gothic architecture, with them big towers that you always see in the films. Best thing about it though is a great view of Manhattan and its rarely crowded (as most people are travelling over it). Oh, and it's free of course! If you walk from Manhattan-->Brooklyn, you could also check out the Brooklyn Bridge Park. If you want to stay in Manhattan, check out the High Line

2. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (A.K.A "The Met")
Along with the Louvre, one of the best museums to visit if you appreciate art and culture. Ranges from Egyptian to Roman, Greek to Japanese Samurai. I could spend all day here. Oh, you also get access to other off-site parts of The Met like the Cloisters (medieval). Since the Met is literally connected to it, you could/should also check out Central Park.
Tip: The "Suggested donation" per person is $25. Suggested being the keyword. The Met is VERY well-funded, so don't feel too bad.

3. "Top of the Rock" - Rockerfeller Center Observation Deck
Wonderful panoramic views of New York, including the massive Central Park. What differentiates this from the top of the Empire State Building is that you can actually see (and take photo's of yourself in front of) the Empire State from "The Rock". Downside: Its about $18 per adult (the Empire State is $20 each). If you're here after Thanksgiving, they may have the tree up.

4. Ferry 'cross the... erm... Bay
You can get the Staten Island Ferry from lower Manhattan. Firstly, its free. Second, they run about every 20 minutes or so. Most importantly, you get great view of Manhattan receding as you travel to Staten Island, and of course coming in at you on the return trip. You also go right past the Statue Of Liberty, so again a good "photo op". Staten Island is kind of like the Birkenhead of New York.

5. Grand Central Terminal
Just a huge, HUGE railway terminal. Built in 1913, it lives up to the "Grand" name. The original New York Penn Station got knocked down in the 60's (and people kicked off) and was much nicer, but this is still lovely.

There's a million things to do like, most people get the touristy stuff out of the way first but let me know if you're looking for stuff more off the beaten path and that.

You went to the quietest parts of Manhattan the time of the biggest stock market crash since the 20s mate.

Financial district is empty after 7ish on a weekday and most of the weekend even at the best of times.

FWIW, I went to Miami and didn't like it. Felt like a dump and loads of homeless because of the warm weather and that. Each to their own like, I think I just don't like Florida in general.

Yeah i came over from being in Singapore and Tokyo where it didnt have an impact in terms of nightlife.

Was amazed at the lack of people though and even in one apparently main place to go for lunch it was quite empty with waitresses hanging around our table...

Colleague kept saying their hair looked nice and that his mum was a hairdresser...asking them to turn around so he could see the back of their heads (asses)...gullible girls.

Just been into town and booked it based on this thread, got a good deal, £600 each for 4 nights. Staying at Wellington hotel instead of one I mentioned in OP. Excited for it now, we've got palace away on the Saturday so will go to the Mr D's pub (can't think of name)

Thanks again.
