This reported part of the deal is what confuses me the most: why do they need to borrow money from him if they're so wealthy? Does that not raise alarm bells?
If it's some form of tax issue or to negate potential concerns regarding their ownership, there must be other concerns regarding their proposed plans for the club.
I still severely doubt that the deal will actually ever happen, but if it does then there's lots of issues that suggest it isn't going to go the way their fans may want.
The probability of them coming in and spending big and progressing is very slim to none.
The couple of Geordies I've spoken to, when I've asked this have just flounced off in a sulk. They are justifying the Staveley part on the basis of her role with City, which is fine though I don't think she kept a major shareholding in City for very long. Nor did they involved a 3rd party to own a fairly chunky part of the ownership. However there is a little precedent there.
The bit that is confusing is borrowing money from Mike Ashley. I mean they clearly have the money to buy Newcastle, and pay what he wants. And in truth, if you were going to look to make it a super club, and throw money at the project irrespective of the return you may or may not get, why would you be bothered about £60million pounds of difference? You'd just want to see the end of him.
It's not that they don't have the money. It's not that even with a downturn they may not be able to afford the liquidity. It's a choice. And as indicated above, it's a choice that doesn't sit logically with trying to do what Manchester City wanted to do.
The fact this has taken as long as it has, it's been on and off what, 3-4-5 times also suggests to me I don't think they are quite as committed as people say. Moshiri swooped and bought Everton almost the following day. Likewise at City it was all done very quickly. Abramovich looked at Chelea's ground and made his mind up. There was no prolonged negotiate or deep thought, as fundamentally I'm not sure it was just about an investment, or was about having a toy.
If you really wanted to turn Newcastle into a powerhouse, why wait months and years? You're just wasting time and allowing them to fall further behind. You've just lost Benitez, and they may have even been relegated this year. The loss of revenue is far greater than the £60millon.
My personal view looking at the information we have, is Staveley may know a rogue member, who may be interested (partly or fully) but certainly not the central decision makers. I suspect she will run the club. I also suspect the Reuben brothers may get the contracts for some of the redevelopments they have to do.
In the early phases there may be a little up front cash to spend but I suspect they will want to see a return.
I do not expect to see Bin Salman sitting at games (ah La Abramovich, Moshiri or the Sheikhs) as he won't have either the financially or spectator interest in the same way.
So it's a big wait and see for me. We were told Villa and Wolves were going to do this, and neither have. Lets see how this plays out. If they are going to do what people think they will, you will see it this summer or not at all.
