Newcastle Utd (and Viz)

The thing is with them, and we found this too, is that the "top young players" are just going to have no interest in going there. Malaga were owned by a Sheikh for a bit, and Malaga is sunny, warm and are a bigger club than Newcastle, and they couldn't attract said players. Newcastle have no name recognition, they've not won a league in almost any living person's lifetime, and have not played in Europe in most of the players living lifetime. There is just no way they will attract players, who want to win things over the next 3-4 years. They don't have the stadium, name, training facilities, tradition etc to attract such players.

People talk about Chelsea, but Chelsea were a top 6 team when taken over, and had been regularly trophy winners and title challengers. So it was easier for them to go and get those top players. It didn't seem such a big jump. City was slightly different granted, but they were still top half and pumped a fair bit in in the previous couple of seasons. They were probably where we are now, and so the jump was more doable. Newcastle are perennial relegation fodder. They have a long way to jump back.

If the plan is top young players, they are going to really struggle to execute that game plan.

I think players will go there if the money is right, there is no point in burying our heads in the sand, they will be a threat if they throw enough money at it. On the flip side it's not easy and they won't go from this to CL in 2 years. That gives us and every other club chance to improve to make that jump even harder.

Every decent player they are after one of the 7-8 other clubs should bid just to force them to pay top dollar for everything to make it that little bit more difficult.

Isco left well before that.

But fair enough point. They attracted some good players. But I'm not sure any were "top" young players. We may be splitting hairs. Malaga were also close to Europe and play in a sunny part of the world, and signed mainly Spanish players. I'm not sure top young players from abroad will be moving from abroad to play for them and elite talent here. Like I just can't see Arnold going there or whatever.

Seen someone mention on twitter during the 90's the bulk of their better players were British based with their foreign players only tending to stick around 2-3 seasons as the area isn't as attractive as a say London/Cheshire.

Saying that I think UEFA changing FFP from profit and loss to the salary cap is them desperate to get money pumping into the european clubs that are potless at present post Pandemic.

Newcastle and everyone else in England with money to spend can find bargains. When Richarlison makes his inevitable move to PSG next summer I hope we are smart and bring a few top players from overseas here such as Diaz.

Yes they had not been run into the ground.

One thing that got me with this, was apparently Wilson and Fraser were on the list of signings and were signed thinking the takeover was coming. That doesn't really stack up.
If they have any sense it does though mate, they need players of the quality to actually jeep them up first and foremost, it's why I could see the likes of Holgate, Keane etc and players of that level being targets (if they have sense) otherwise it could be a west ham scenario when they brought on tevez and mascherano and still went down.

Not going to go into pure detail but two things.
1 - Newcastle is a far bigger club than Malaga.
2 - Malaga’s sheikh wouldn’t have been willing to drop 3-400k a week on players the way these will in the future.

PIF is worth a rumoured 700b. Of course people will go there if the money is right.
I seem to recall Giroud’s mrs not wanting to come to Live up here, it could be a problem getting the the top players to go to Horse punchers, but we will see.

Yeh I think Newcastle will struggle there, wasn’t disagreeing sure that part just the Malaga bit. I said a couple of days ago that all clubs are rich and offer obscene wages now so they’ll need to pay way over the top whilst they can’t offer Europe.

Yes fair point. I suppose that context with Malaga- that it was 10-15 years ago is important. I just struggle to see Newcastle taking Foden/Arnold or other top young players. It's easier said than done.

They will still be able to add talent. This will sound mad, but Kane is probably more gettable than say a Foden.

Yes. But this is where I see a Koeman on steroids situation. I'm not sure they will put the infrastructure in and just allow a big name manager to start spending massively. There will also be a huge demand from their fans too, more so than even here to make a statement.

I could see them paying huge fees for a bunch of average players. Which will keep them up but not a lot else. Then without a major sale, they will be up against FFP. People seem to forget here, it was selling Lukaku/Stones in consecutive summers that really allowed our spending. So they will either just ignore it, or be stopped quite quickly.

Compete for what though, the league? I can't see that level of player wanting to join Newcastle, almost irrespective of money paid. I mean how much money would it take?

They can’t do it like City because of FFP. This is going to have to be a slower build. I understand they will have some wiggle room over the next 2 or 3 years to spend 150-200m a season because Ashley has been running a tight ship but after that period ends they are going to be handicapped. Unless they have CL football at that point they are not going to be able to allowed to operate a wage bill like the current big hitters. The good players they pick up will also have to be paid a premium wage which will further hinder them. Any inflated sponsorship deal will come under huge scrutiny

They will definitely get there but I think 7 or 8 years from regularly challenging for the title. This is fantastic for their local fans though. There will be huge expenditure into the club infrastructure and city and I am sure the supporters will be put front and centre

We will have to wait and see what UEFA do with FFP mate. I'll be honest I haven't really seen the new proposals. To me it's a win win. They will either block Newcastle, or they will break it/change it and we will have a lot more wriggle room.

As for us, I worry about that Diaz you know. I saw him against Liverpool and thought he was poor. I'd be wary of signing him,but hopefully we can add some quality.

A lot but I don't think anyone thinks (apart from their supporters and cat lady) that the league is on at the moment. It's get into the top 4.

If they are smart they should build up slowly replacing each set of players better than the next without paying silly money, but they probably aren't so like you've mentioned hopefully it blows FFP apart and we can compete with the elite clubs who tried to pull up the drawbridge.

Wonder if Merson will be complaining about the Barcodes destroying the transfer system in January - a la Richarlison a few years back....
I'm sure there'll be a memo circulating Bt sports and Sky telling their minions not to upset the new kids on the block (in readiness for the impending ESL grab Mark II)

Since the previous link I have tried to watch him in a few games and tbh I don't think he is a PL suited player.

One thing is the Papers and co will love been able to write about any player true or not been wanted by Newcastle, just so they can make rubbish up, you cant seem to look at anything anywhere without Newcastle been mentioned which is pretty stupid, as even if they do become good, for me it will be many years yet, not now like some are carrying on-still got a good chance of going down if they carry on the way they are

There’s only so many ‘superstars’ to go around. Anyone in this bracket is already playing for a top club, be it here or on the continent. Just who, realistically, could they sign in January?

Our owners have nothing to feel superior about. It's been pure torture watching the stuff they've been responsible for these last few years.
I'll get me coat.
