Newcastle Utd (and Viz)

that “next mbappe” has turned down the chance to play for newcastle, despite them offering to increase his wages 8-fold!
be interesting to see if they complete any more deals before the window slams shut

They will stay up with them signings.
I can seen Brentford being pulled right into it. They have played about three games more then everyone below them and are on a bad run.

I bet City and Liverpool are quaking in their boots

lol What planet are you on, man? Absolutely no one with a grain of sense is talking about Newcastle in the context of the title race; we literally might not even finish 17th. In fact I think this forum is literally the only place I see that sort of patter. Dan Burn has been in Brighton's first team all season btw.

Pleased with our transfer business even if it isn't enough to keep us up (though I think that would probably be on Howe if not). Certainly beats the summer, which climaxed with our senior management refusing to sanction a loan deal for Hamza Choudury. Pity we didn't get an attacker cos there's not many goals in the side and Wood is only alright.

With respect mate, people on this thread are saying you will be winning CLs within 5 years (to be fair the fella saying it is a Kopite). So some realism is needed.

Burn has played more this season, but most of his time at Brighton hes been a reserve, or been played our of position.

Look I think your transfer business is ok, and as I've said to you a few times, I think your expectations of Newcastle seem pretty realistic. The next challenge for you guys is to try and break into the top 8, and honestly that could take you some time.

My point is, it's not the equivalent of the 1st transfer window Chelsea had on 03, or City had in 08. It's probably not even our level of window we had in 16. Forget us, as we spent badly, but I dont see this takeover playing out as a carbon copy of City or Chelsea. It certainly hasnt thus far.

I appreciate that's not your narrative, but it's a lot of peoples narrative and its heavily pushed by the media. So its worthwhile adding some counter weight.

Does that mean Newcastle cant/wont improve? Absolutely not. But I'm not seeing some inevitability that you are winning leagues or whatever within 4.5 years as Staveley predicted. Or within the CL in 2 (after this season) like Keiron Dyer said. But who knows, maybe Targett, Wood and Burn will prove me wrong.

Fair enough; if your sass was directed at anyone genuinely coming out with utter, utter bilge like "Newcastle will win the league/the Champions League in five years" then you have my backing. lol Because anyone who believes that that is a genuine prospect is, frankly, a moron. Ashley and Bruce left behind a total [Poor language removed]-tip that's been neglected for years; we're far more likely to be milling around higher/lower-mid-table during that period than anything genuinely remarkable happening. That's if we stay up this season, which is far from guaranteed.

In Staveley's case it was platitudes on day 1 of the takeover; "we're ambitious, we want to win the Prem in ten years, yada yada yada." Just the typical guff you'd get from someone in that position in that moment. I'm sure they'll give it a crack cos why bother if not, but their competence is up for debate atm. Promising signs this month, especially having secured two full internationals of Trippier/Guimaraes quality, but who knows what they're capable of achieving. Might be lots, might be nowt - impossible to call at this stage.

Regardless of how you might rate our signings in the context of anything other than a relegation battle, they're good business purely because - in every single case - they represent upgrades on what we had. Even in the case of those reserves you've mentioned (aka, first choice CB at the team with the fifth best defence in the country / Villa's player of the year last season). ?

I think you only need to go back on this thread to see some of the wild predictions.

What I'll add though mate, is they are often covered with remarks that what Newcastle are doing (spending money) is somehow immoral, despite the fact every club spends money to varying degrees.

Like I honestly dont care how much Newcastle want to spend. If you spend loads, and buy a player off Everton it gives us a chance to spend money to make ourselves better. I will never knock anyone for spending money. You have as much right to spend as Liverpool, or City, or United, the same way we do, or Brighton do or anyone else does.

I just dont think that you will automatically become the next City or Chelsea. It is a lot harder now.

As for your signings, they are ok. I'm not sure Targett or Burns are upgrades really, and honestly would have Wilson over Wood as well. If you plan to change tact it's fair enough, but honestly if you keep going on that basis you will find you run out of money you can spend, and will have a load of players who are 30+ who you cant move on.

@catcherintherye I'd have Wilson over Wood any day of the week too, but he's out until Spring because his muscles are made of Cheese Strings and Playdough; so my claim is that Wood is an upgrade on Dwight Gayle/literally no one, heh.

We had a backline of Krafth, Schar, Lascelles and Ritchie at one point earlier in the season so I'm very happy with Burn and Targett.

Anyway, we'll see how good/bad they are in our next game against I don't know who. lol
