That's a pretty subjective interpretation. Allardyce is typically brought in as a firefighter to save a crisis team from relegation. He's never failed. If some of those teams are subsequently relegated soon after his departure surely a more reasonable interpretation is that the factor most influential in keeping those poor teams in the Premiership has been removed namely Allardyce?

Or look at it this way, the teams he manages are worse the season after he leaves than they where the season before he took over, he also came close to taking Newcastle down whilst in charge - closer than any manager they had previously had.

The Lyon game in the grand scheme of things has now become a bit of a dead rubber.

Use it as an opportunity to maybe to give either Besic or Snides a run out at centre half.

Let's face it, they couldn't do any worse.

agree, need to try out someone else as left back as well...not sure if someone like gana could have a go...although he was all over the place on sunday...crumbs!

I'm looking at that and nodding in agreement at every word - then I'm looking at the money we spent this summer and wondering how the two go together.

How did it come to this indeed.

On the substantive question of the next manager though: we might have to accept more pain before we see anything get better. That goes for even a firefighter like Alardyce as much as a more progressive replacement.

I fear that if we go for a Dyce or Alardyce it's merely a blind panic move and their appointment will rock the foundations of the club long term and all organisational confidence about our identity and self worth will be in tatters.

It's a terrible dilemma. However, I'd swerve the quick fixes. that would be my instinct. Even now in this full blown crisis.

I share these concerns. It's still relatively early in the season so if the right appointment was made in the international break (Tuchel?) there is time, but not unlimited time, to sort out the mess. In an ideal world I would like a young coach with the ability to stay on for an extended period and build an identity for the team whilst appreciating the finer technical aspects of the game and playing entertaining, but winning football.

Securing PL status must be the priority though, whatever the means. So for me, Allardyce comes into consideration at the very least. I have thought about the off-field repercussions of appointing Allardyce. We would certainly be ripe for office banter and jeering but that's to be expected and from folk who would love it if we went down.

Would appointing him have an effect on the ability to attract sponsorship and would it have a negative impact on our corporate brand? It seems the club does a good enough job of limiting and belittling itself all on its own in that regard.

Allardyce certainly could not be associated with anything calling itself The School of Science. Nor could anything we have seen since 2013-2014, and relegation certainly couldn't be. But the wider football world, outside of Twitter jibes and tired stereotypes, doesn't and won't care a damn about who is Everton manager.

I still think it's unlikely giving the timing that Allardyce will get the job - a definitive decision looks like it will be taken in the next few weeks and if the season was a further 4-6 weeks down the road with no sign of an improvement, he would come more strongly into play then.

Dyche just seems small-time with a few decent seasons at Burnley. But probably more likely than Allardyce to get it if if came to that.

What all this screams is how we have come to such a pass. Talk about between caught between a rock and a hard-place. That is what Moshiri must reflect upon.

My heart sank yesterday. I think I realised Unsworth isn't that right move.
This is it. You hoped that he would have an instant impact and the players stepped up etc. It was better at Chelsea even though we lost. But yesterday, was a poor first half. We didnt get out of the traps. Unsworth saying we dominated in the second half doesn't wash I'm afraid. We've heard that alot this season. The game was done.
I think whatever happens his place at the club is secure. He's done great at U23 level. Not sure he's ready for 1st team manager just yet though. This is a massive job. Lets see how it pans out after the Watford game.

I remember being hounded around January last year for suggesting we had midfielders falling out of cupboards and stating we didn't need any more.

Indeed you did.

You kept asking why Schneiderlin was such a priority.

And look at him now.....left sat on the bench as a teenager is brought on before him....a teenager who looked better over 45 minutes than he has looked all season.

This time last week I was against a quick fix and wanted a big name. But after yesterday's shambles I think we might need. It's actually far worse than I imagined. Survival is the main issue here. We're in trouble, serious trouble. Unsworth is certainly not the man anyway.

The thing that seems to be happening is that the desperate option of a Dyche or Alardyce seems to be doing the rounds and finding favour because they bring experience. Well so too do other more palatable options like Mancini or Tuchel...and an ability to build a club.

We have to get away from thinking of some false choice between a building for the future appointment (but wont get the job done short term) and a "quick fix" pragmatic appointment.

...£23M.

I bet Mourinho is still pissing himself about that.

I think the MOTD analysis was right though when it focussed on the lack of quality finisher. That isn't down to Unsworth and any new man would face that.

We are short in almost all positions apart from the GK, yet we have the following players for 3 positions:

Morgan Schneiderlin
Idrissa Gueye
Gylfi Sigurdsson
Davy Klaassen
Muhamed Besic
Tom Davies
Kieran Dowell
Beni Baningime
James McCarthy
Ross Barkley
Wayne Rooney

Our summer transfer window was a disaster and whoever comes in will have a major rebuilding to do including a major clear-out

You'd laugh if you didn't realise it was so criminally negligent. What the hell were they thinking?

Can't argue with that. We can't rectify that before January (maybe even next summer) and that's the crime of it all. Total mismanagement in the transfer window. Disastrous. Hopefully its not terminal and we can 'get away with it'. Very worried as it stands.

I am working on the basis that they at least have been speaking with people since Koeman went.
I think they have been speaking all along. If they have any sense they have done drastic movement to getting new in after yesterday. If not...we might get relegated. New manager would need time to adapt....this means our new manager will most likely be already in PL. I think it will be S.D
