People whinging that Emery would have been a 'bigger statement' should wonder what it would be like getting beat in every away game. No manager has the silver bullet, a lot of a club's success stems from the combination of manager and players at that time. Leicester being a good example. It's horses for courses with managers, players and clubs. Fingers crossed we've got it right this time.
Not true on Emery.

The fella knows his priorities. He knew the leafue was not going anywhere so he focused on the cups. Sevilla ended the season winning one of them and getting the reward for finishing higher in the league. I would happily take a 7th place and champions league football right now, getting into the champions league is all that matters

Can't get my head round people moaning about getting Koeman in.
It's what we slag them lot over, false sense of grandeur.

People have conveniently forgotten where we have been as a club for 30 years, or in the league for 2 years and suddenly think that every manager in the world will want to manage us becuase we won Trophies decades ago.

Originally I backed koeman before Martinez got sacked. Sensible option and therefore I'm glad we got him. Would have preferred emery but before he was an option I suggested koeman so I'm looking forward to the coming season under him

Far more success in Holland than Koeman.

Not been a laughing stock at benfica, valencia and AZ Alkmaar and almost did a keegan at PSV....doesnt fall out with clubs best players.

only positive on koeman is that he kept southampton stable....

koeman only takes one game at a time with no long term strategy.
Far more? Won one more title, no experience outside one league

I guess it comes down to whether you trust The Esk or not

It isn't that, it's about trusting the information. In these situations people tend to jump the gun, someone may have done that to the Esk, or to any other 'itk' (sic).

We are all blues, so, we should be conditioned to not believing something until there's proof, I.e. Koeman being sent to the stands in his 9th game in charge....

But we don't, we're so desperate for some positivity we go off quickly like when you haven't had a bit for ages and a shelf stacker at Aldi brushes past you in the veg section...and then there's the flash Harry online gambling spread betting community who are scrambling to clear 38p on a left field name like Bobby Davro being appointed.

Strange bunch those Toffees...

Promised by who? An Internet forum?

We have been nowhere for 2 years, and have poached a manager from a team 5 places above us who has a huge standing in the game and has proved himself in this league. It's a massive step forward for us and I'm sure he will get us back on track pretty quickly.

Not sure what people expected.

Are you sure we're allowed to make such reasonable statements?

didnt we have a manager last season that done that?? focused on cups and our league form suffered massivley. the league is your bread and butter first and foremost

This post may be of niche interest.

People who do a lot of stats around football are very keen on the "expected goal" model.

They look at how good teams are at creating chances and preventing the opposition from taking shots. The quality of the shots is also taken into account so that a team that allows lots of shots from 30m out is rated as better than one that allows only 3 chances but all from unmarked players in the 6 yard box.

For me this is the best method for working out whether a team is effective or not.

Basically you want a team that creates a lot more decent chances than it allows. Over time teams that do that will prosper.

The likes of Ferguson show up well on this. His Manchester United teams created a lot more good chances than the opposition. As he generally had top class finishers too his teams were also above average in converting these chances into goals.

Having Van Nistelrooy on the end of a decent chances rather than Anichebe makes a big difference.

Also having a great goalkeeper helps with your defensive stats. If you are facing Peter Cech in a one on one you are less likely to score than if you are up against Bogdan.

So to allow for this managers are rated as to the total difference between the chances they create and those they allow.

The good news is that Koeman shows up well on this measure in the Premier League. His teams create more decent chances than they allow.

Far better than Martinez for example.

The less good news is that Moyes does as well, if not slightly better, than Koeman over a much larger sample size.

We are appointing Moyes but not Moyes.

Probably victim of thinking we could get a 'Top Level Manager' but think of it from outside the Club.

We've finished 11th in back to back seasons and our best striker is in the media chatting wham about how he wants to leave etc, why would you, if you are a 'Top Level Manager' go to a team that finished in the bottom half of the Premier League twice on the run when you can easily have the picking of better teams?

Roberto Martinez has damaged the reputation of this Football Club in the last two years and it needs repairing big time. Kopite bias or not, why do you think the media were linking us with Hughes, Howe and even Moyes when the season ended? We were a Club that just endured a shocking season off the back of a just as poor one the season before.

Moshiri may have wanted the best, but the damage was done by Roberto Martinez (And even Bill), Ronald Koeman for me is the man that can rebuild that reputation. He has previous of rebuilding, he walked into Southampton with their best players being sold, yet he's finished above us twice. He may not be that 'Next Level Manager' but i think he could get us to a good enough position to where we become a much more attractive proposition.

Just to clarify why I'd be gutted if Saints got Emery.

He rescued Valencia after Koeman's time there and took them from 2 points off relegation to 6th, 3rd, 3rd.

People seem to like to talk about winning 3 consecutive Europa league titles as if it's just a 'good' achievement. That is an INCREDIBLE achievement all whilst having his best players sold each year and operating on a huge negative spend.

I'm not sure i'd care much about not winning an away game all season if it meant finishing 7th and winning a European cup.

And he seems a touch mental about football which I like, i'd rather having some animation on the touchline than the arms folded, look of utter bemusement that we had with Martinez.

But i'm happy with Koeman.
