It's possible, and if United do want him, they're playing a pretty big hand of poker with their current approach - that's not usually their style. Market leaders who want the "best" candidate normally just get the job done - hence my comments that there's no certainty he will go there.

The cost of taking Jose will be viewed as a business development cost - it improves our chances of retaining talent and recruiting very high quality individuals, it improves our chance of winning trophies and will certainly strengthen the negotiation hand in sponsorship and commercial deals. Therefore his "price" should not be too much of a consideration.

We're almost in a win-win situation. If we get him that's a win, if we don't but we are seen as having been genuine in our attempt to get him then that really improves our hand with a Koeman or de Boer etc.

I think we're beginning to see the changes in Everton that having a major shareholder (future owner) like Moshiri enables. We need to sort out many things at the club, but we seem to be sorting the priority which is on the pitch. The rest will come very soon thereafter.

Excellent summary mate. Do you think the decision to try and hang onto Martinez until the end of the season was to try and give us a less pressured what to negotiate with a calibre of manager (like Mourinho)?

The fact that we are targeting Mourinho will resonate through every aspect of the club. Whether we get him or not it is a huge statement to think we can rival Manchester United for a manager. It is the embodiment of Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (which is often misunderstood). It doesn't mean you win every game but it means you have high expectations.

From the employees, to the staff to the players, to the board and importantly the new manager it will be clear Moshiri sees Everton's level as that of attracting Mourinho. Either you match that ambition and performance or you will be moved on. I think that will be a massive change from the 11 years of Moyes.

Exciting times and as always thanks for the info!

...already been spotted on COUNTY RD mate, bought 6 pots of KFC gravy, asked for them to be double-wrapped as well... then walked up to the B&M and came out with 3 - (yep, THREE) - FULL carrier bags of pure MOAM....nothing else, just that sweet, sweet candy...

Class that, that's a man who knows what he wants and goes RIGHT out and gets it.

MOAM for dipping in KFC gravy?!?!
This guy thinks unconventionally...

IT'S ON.

Olsen, Koeman, Blind, ten Cate, Van Basten, Jol - bascically the list of managers who have succeeded LVG at Ajax, all with the Ajax phillosophy and unless i am mistaken not one fo them has managed to transfer it to any other club they have subsequently managed

Ajax's model works because they are Ajax, trying to just copy it without any realisation of WHY it works is daft

It's an excellent point mate. I would only counter it with two considerations;
1) The Ajax model could be adopted at Everton. We have lots of the things that are already quite similar and I think it would really benefit us as a club and be a good natural fit.
2) De Boer has had far more success and consistency than any of the above Ajax managers. The only one who has come close to him would be Koeman, who has done pretty well in the premiership.

I am surprised though that if Moshiri is looking for a proven winner and available for next season, Pellegrini isn't higher up in the discussion. Would definitely see him as more fitting the requirements immediately than De Boer

Not read back but what do people think of the papers saying moriniho will reject us?

The papers will pander to their own agenda and the biggest blocks of purchasers... in footie terms Untied supporters.
When Jose joins Everton, they'll have no alternative than to change their attitude.

Andy Dunn shows how detached he is from the situation, wanting Martinez to be given last game 'Poor of everton'. When you see comments like this, it makes you appreciate how little the media care and know about us. Only Henry winter thought we had done the correct thing getting rid when we did, but his opinion was quickly shouted down.
Henry Winter has always been my preferred football writer. He isn't a sensationalist, he talks sense, which is why he doesn't write for a tabloid.

OK, I know The Times is a tabloid, but only in dimension.

Always quite liked Paddy Barclay when he was on it. This morning was terrible, Dunn and Custis arguing like kids. Winter was the only one who talked sense.

Im starting to think we need someone to steady the ship a bit. Let the players know who is boss. A stickler for fitness levels. Tried and tested tactically. Is honest in the media part of a managers role.

Im thinking Moyes is not a bad choice
10 plus years no trophy. Nuts. The club was stagnant for last 5 years. Yes he did a great job when he came in first but the lad doesn't know how to win the big matches. No way. Any bit of a bad start and the fans would turn in him too. That's just the situation we are in at the moment. Players would leave and Davie hasn't got the pulling power or name or rep to get anyone decent in. At least someone like De bour has some current standing in world football and it might be possible for him to attract some decent players when the likes of lukaku etc move on.

The Sunday Times Sports section has a lead headline in its sports section: "Everton sound out Jose as United dither" & the article goes on to state that EFC have sounded out both his representatives & the man himself directly about "leading the club". However, within the piece is says:
"According to close friends, Mourinho is unlikely to accept Everton's offer."

Note the "close friends" bit - not the man himself.

So we can keep on thinking the impossible dream
