NFL 2023 season

He definitely is. Is he Mahomes or Brady? No, but he is a cut above the majority of QBs in the league and the money he's getting is in line with the QB market right now

Maybe we can disagree on what is a top NFL QB, but weird to write that and not parse what I've written, much of it materially similar to what you've written as evidence he is a top NFL QB.

Yeah, maybe I should have read that a bit more thoroughly. But even if you put him at 12, and he's arguably in the top ten for me, that is still significant when you consider what sort of quarterback is floating around the bottom 10 to 15 qbs. That what I would regard as a top Quarterback

The Falcons have been so dire at quarterback for years, I don't think anyone can argue that Cousins is a massive upgrade on what they have had

Agree he's a good fit for them. I'm not sure how to build an NFL team these days, you have to overpay for a decent QB but that limits the rest of your roster. I'd argue there are about 5-6 top QBs and the rest are "average" or worse. But you can do very well with an "average" QB if you build the right system around him, but the problem with that is I'd argue there are around 5-6 good NFL coaches and the rest are "average or worse." Usually, when you pair an average QB with an average coach, unless their strengths match you will get below average results.

If I had to rank NFL QBs (since nobody asked), I'd probably rank them:

Elite
1. Mahomes (don't tell the rat I wrote this)

Great
2. Jackson
3. Burrow (if he's healthy)

Good
4. Purdy (he might be average, but he's looked good so far)
5. Allen
6. Lawrence (he might only be average and still has severe flaws, but I think he's good)

Above Average/Average
7. Stroud (looks the real deal, should move up)
8. Hebert (super meh, second coming of Philip Rivers is what I fear)
9. Hurts (not sure if he is top or bottom of this list)
10. Stafford
11. Goff
12. Tua
13. Love
14. Dak (great until it matters)
15. Cousins (super meh)

Outside of Stroud the 2nd list is really all the same ranking. On their day each of these guys is great, but are any of these "taking the game by the scruff of the neck?"

That's half the league QBs right there, and to me the distance is greater between 1 and 4 as it is 4 to 15.

I would have Lawrence below all those in the average list

And Allen is in the same bracket as Jackson and Burrow

I feel like the Super Bowl next season will be Green Bay vs Kansas City.

Not sure what the Jacobs move is all about but as long as there is no regression from Love and they draft well I think they go all the way.

Obviously the Chiefs win though

Not a bad list to be fair, even considering my thoughts on Lamar, who is understandably a divisive figure when it comes to how good he is given his very specific talents and weaknesses. Tough to rank him, and I generally rank him lower.

But I feel that Stafford is one of the more underrated QBs out there, and last year proved that again. He was all but declared dead after he got hurt midseason and his performances down the stretch when not at 100% was something to behold. If he didn't play a decade in Detroit, I think people would feel differently about him.

Stroud looks destined for the top. Like a Burrow type guy

I think the jury is still out on Tua. Not sure how much of his recent success is him, or McDaniel's offense, which good defenses have figured out

As much as I love Purdy and obviously Love has something, Cousins is, at this very moment, a far better quarterback than both imo. I don't know how you have Tua above him, I could see the arguments for Dak but, again, I think Cousins is better. I think Goff might have overtaken him this year but that's another borderline one

The knock on Cousins is:

1) He is terrible in prime time. As in big games in prime time Sunday night or Monday night. He's just generally not as good when the spotlight is on him
2) He's not as good on the road.

He's kind of like a poor man's Matt Ryan.

That's still an above average QB. But definitely not near elite. He's not going to put a team on his back and will them to victory like some of those other guys at the top can.
