NFL 2023 season

Not a bad list to be fair, even considering my thoughts on Lamar, who is understandably a divisive figure when it comes to how good he is given his very specific talents and weaknesses. Tough to rank him, and I generally rank him lower.

But I feel that Stafford is one of the more underrated QBs out there, and last year proved that again. He was all but declared dead after he got hurt midseason and his performances down the stretch when not at 100% was something to behold. If he didn't play a decade in Detroit, I think people would feel differently about him.

Stroud looks destined for the top. Like a Burrow type guy

I think the jury is still out on Tua. Not sure how much of his recent success is him, or McDaniel's offense, which good defenses have figured out

I don't love Jackson, but he's consistent. In the end he'll be thought of as an above average NFL QB with some nice achievements. Better than Donovan McNabb (also a "mobile QB" stereotype) and Steve McNair (who I really liked) most likely, but how much higher than these? Most of the guys on this list share one thing in common, they'll be easily forgotten when they've stopped playing. Lamar's 2 MVPs will help him stay in memory longer.

The knock on Cousins is:

1) He is terrible in prime time. As in big games in prime time Sunday night or Monday night. He's just generally not as good when the spotlight is on him
2) He's not as good on the road.

He's kind of like a poor man's Matt Ryan.

That's still an above average QB. But definitely not near elite. He's not going to put a team on his back and will them to victory like some of those other guys at the top can.

The best middle of the road QBs are good managers with few flaws. That type can win a SB and stay in the league. Stafford is one of these. Goff looks like he's become one of these. In a sense that's what Brady was and Mahomes is, except they are excellent game mangers and handle the pressure extremely well. Cousins makes dumb mistakes and doesn't handle the pressure, so despite his strengths his flaws drag him down. If he can flip that he can win something in ATL with the weapons he has.

Fair point

The second MVP probably puts him in the HOF. He’s going to have to keep playing well, but check the list of guys with 2+.

Yeah, that's right, I just don't see him coming near any top whatever lists unless he wins a SB
Probably not. Kinda a shameful byproduct of our current sports culture though because someone like Dan Marino should be closer to top whatever lists than John Elway as a not super well thought out but definitely true example.

It's difficult but Marino is probably more the exception. I had a glance at QBs who've not won SB and there probably aren't 10 that you'd argue are top QBs. I would put Marino, Moon, Fouts, Jackson, and probably Anderson and Jurgenson (who I really know nothing about) in the group of top QBs. What other notable QBs aren't on that list? Ok, so these guys stand out and are in the top 30-40 QBs all time (Marino top 10), but at the bottom of the list you trend to average... and then you get to guys like Rivers, Ryan, Cousins. I think the tiers are really steep. All are great players from an objective perspective, but in NFL terms some are average at best.
