NFL 2024 Season

What you find is that teams are obsessed with measureables. Speed in particular. The problem is there are a dozen speedsters on every roster which cancels it out.

I was only saying that to @SLAVEN BILIC earlier, speed is the most overrated attribute for a player unless you're looking at the dedicated deep threat receivers who absolutely do need it. It's a game that mostly occurs within 10 or 20 yards of the LOS, and the vast majority of plays you'll make will be decided by intelligence and aggression.

Speaking of speed, will be interesting to see Reid's schemes for both Hollywood and Worthy, that's a potentially very exciting pairing

I think McCarthy will end it. They're in a tough division and Darnold has run out of rope I think. There'll be loud calls for McCarthy to start by the midway point I reckon

NFC North has gone from a joke of a division a few seasons back to really tough.

I'm exited for the future of the Vikings and can see what Kwesi is trying to do. Next season can go either way but next offseason can be a game changer in free agency.

It's the best division in the whole league team-for-team imo. Bears are the biggest outlier, they could be incredible but there is also every chance they could still absolutely stink

Poles has done a great job completely overhauling the roster since last regime and we now have the players to compete so if we stink it'll be due to the head coach not learning from his first 2 seasons or williams not living up to the hype (both entirely plausible).

The talent is definitely there now. I hope they're good, and Williams has ended up in the best situation a number 1 QB draft pick could ask for. My concerns are about coaching and Williams' mentality too. He seems very brand-managed and distracted by a lot of things that aren't football at such an early point in his career. I hope he's everything they say he is, but it's really one of those wait-and-see types of situations

It's so weird, at the same time drafting is a complete crapshoot but then players walk into training camp and they can size up who can play in moments. It's kinda like the Prince Oumar situation--first practice and all the players know he was a terrible transfer. My favorite story is Gus Frerrote vs Heath Schuler fighting for the starting job with the Redskins in 1995. Both were rookies--Schuler a 1st round pick from a big school and Frerrote a 7th rounder from a small school. When training camp began the story is that every veteran on the Redskins could instantly tell--first training camp huddle allegedly--that Schuler wasn't a pro QB and Frerrote was. The story in the press was "training camp battle" but only because the coach and GM didn't want to embarrass themselves and their fragile #1 pick QB, but he was never a starting QB. Schuler ended up playing in 29 games over 4 seasons and Frerrote played 147 games in 15 seasons despite lacking NFL talent.

For those of us who watched Jamarcus Russell play at LSU it was clear he couldn't read the college defense. The pro scouts were enamored with his talent, however. Only Pete Prisco seemed to read his play accurately.

One of my favourite players, Amon Ra St.Brown, taken as the 17th Wide Receiver off the board, which is absolutely mad when you think about it. "Not explosive" = Not fast

For the NFL, St. Brown's best role would be as a power slot type of player who you can play for spells on the outside. This would feature his strong blocking, feel on routes, and tough play and hide some of his play speed deficiencies and lack of ability to create with the ball in his hands. Think of him as an efficient No. 3-type piece for a good offense, but not an explosive player.

So many small things make a difference. Antonio Brown was not fast, but he was able to create crazy separation on his routes. Tim Brown ran excellent routes. OBJ was average if not for his ability to high point. Jerry Rice was not blazing fast but everything added up so that you could not catch him. Marvin Harrison could catch everything thrown his way (and yet people downgrade Jr for not being "fast").

Other examples include Devante Adams, Larry Fitzgerald, Chad Johnson.

Bears could draft The Terminator and Batman. They’d still be The Bears. Ditka was the Bears, and in some respects, still is.

I started watching NFL last season. I was persuaded to go along to the casino to watch where they have all the games on series of big screens. I soon became hooked. There was a great atmosphere within the casino with lots of friendly banter but none of the toxicity you get with Premier league fans. It was a nice distraction from Everton

However, I still did not have a team. My mate tried to persuade me to back the Jets like him but I was keen not to follow the crowd so conducted thorough research to find the team that aligns closet to my beloved Everton.

I came to the conclusion that this team was the Bears. Founder members who changed their name like us. Oldest stadium in the league with a new waterfront stadium recently announced following a failed controversial attempt to relocate outside city boundaries. Only Super Bowl win in 1985/6 season which was a great year for us. On the wrong end of one the the biggest rivalries in the sport again like us.

Hopefully though I am coming in at a good time following this draft and the team can start making the post season regularly
