I believe I read somewhere that the tax situation is part of the calculus for Watson. If that’s true, the Dolphins may be more desirable for him
He only has so much leverage. If the Dolphins offer isn't up to par using his no trade clause will just end up with him in Houston still.

Its going to be intriguing watching this. And seeing where he ends up. Like i said before....if he ends up going to someone like the Bears, Colts or 49ers......good defenses, decent WR's and RB's and solid offensive lines.....they automatically become deep play-off/possible SB worthy teams.

If he goes to somewhere like the Jets, Dolphins, Carolina - massive injection of talent immediately and definitely wild card/play-off caliber teams.
Really the Jets and Dolphins have far better packages to offer without the Colts or Niners throwing in someone like Leonard or Bosa. They shouldn't let him get away from them.

What he gains in tax breaks in Florida he'd make back and more with the marketing opportunities in NY. He immediately becomes the biggest sports star in arguably the biggest sports market in the world.

Any chance he goes to the Bears?
About the same chance of Salah coming out and criticising Klopp and Liverpool FC tearing up his contract and signing on a free at Everton scoring the winner at Anfield then pulls down his shorts and starts doing the helicopter in front of the kop.. and Liverpool fans taking it in good sport and not complaining about it.

Nailed on then?!? :D :D

I’m not sure if the market matters so much for football. I see more ads for Mahomes, Rodgers, and Baker Mayfield than anyone else in the NFL and those are three of the smaller markets.
Baseball is still very popular in NY compared to other parts of the country and Aaron Judge is one of the big names of the sport (deGrom and Lindor to a certain degree as well).

Imagine what those 3 would manage in a big market. There is no top 5 football player let alone QB in new York, a top 5 QB in NY is massive.

I don’t think it does. Baseball is an infinitely more regional sport than football. With games being basically every single night for six months, it’s hard to really keep up with more than just one (usually local) team.

Also, you guys were mentioning state sales tax factoring into people’s decision making. It very well may because people just see that a certain state doesn’t specifically have an income tax and assume it’s cheaper, but that’s not how it actually works out most of the time. Here in TN, we don’t have a state income tax, but we have one of the highest sales tax (similar to UK’s VAT) rates in the nation. Ours is roughly 10-11%, so EVERY SINGLE dollar I spend throughout the year is actually $1.11. Also have to account to local property taxes. Long story short, states have to generate revenue by some means and they’re going to do so whether in obvious or more subtle ways.

As long as an athlete doesn’t ever purchase any goods and services or own a home, then sure, Florida is probably dirt cheap compared to other places.

Makes perfect sense for Watson to go the Jets.
That big market is worth more to him than anything else. With Rodgers, Brees, Rivers all out the new tide is coming in, he could be the biggest name.

As a Jets fan, I want him, he’s a franchise quarterback, but you’ve got to get the price right.

Personally I think the Texans would be soft to not deal with Jets or Dolphins who have the most to offer, then let him sit a year and his stock goes down.

But the jets are the least popular team in New York sports

I hear you. I was thinking more in terms of NY (where I was born and raised) having both high sales and income taxes. I honestly can’t remember a time when the most popular athlete in NY was a football player. Mattingly, Gooden/Strawberry, Patrick Ewing, Messier/Gretzky, Jeter were the kings of New York.

Was Eli ever especially popular when the Giants were winning Super Bowls? If not him, the only other guy that might fit the bill would be Namath in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Before that time, baseball would have just been too popular and most popular guys were Yankees/Dodgers/Giants.

Not really. Too inconsistent and maybe not the right personality for NY.
You’re absolutely right about Namath though. Perfect athlete for NY at that time
