Curtis Martin = quality. The stories I've heard from Alabama connections about the first guy would fill a book. Still, Joe's a good guy underneath - being Broadway Joe does something to you. Heck, he got his own TV sitcom for awhile or something. He was Beckham for a short while, and Suzy Kolber is undeniably kissable.

So Jets it is I think.

She looks like she could be from the Island or Jersey - I can see it. It's New York's wool team, ijjy.

She was in the UK TV show Gladiators in the 90's mate and her name was Jet. My first crush!

I don't do the whole wool thing mate so not arsed about that much.

They seem like the Mets though. Like the anti Yankees. Like that.

Edit---

Not that arsed if they're any good either really!

Watching is the best way to find a team to support, but since the season is closed you're out of luck for another 6 months to see most teams in action. You can do worse than paying attention to their rivals, however. Most rivalries are intra-divisonal, although there are some that stretch beyond the current divisions.

Bears hate: Packers, Lions, and Vikings (probably in that order), with a few other historic rivalries
Jets hate: Patriots, Dolphins, and Bills - ahem and the Giants...

edited for completeness...

They are exactly that, but how anybody could sign on for being a Mets fan is past me. The Yankees aren't the Giants, and vice versa. It's really hard to explain. There were both baseball and football Giants in New York you see, and then in 1957...

Have a field day, ijjy.

Sounds insanely confusing. I sort of picked the Mets a long time ago without taking it too seriously. But got into it a bit last season.

Dunno gotta bit of time to settle on a NFL team.

It is insanely confusing - the Mets are basically the resurrection of what was the Giants in NY. The BB Giants moved to SF, and the Yankees and Giants (and Dodgers, too when there were three NY teams) were in different leagues when there was no interleague play. So the Dodgers and Giants were huge rivals in the National League and both moved to California at the same time sixty-five years ago to go on hating each other, while the Yankees were just in the other league winning every year no matter what.

Therefore everybody who isn't a Yankees fan hates them. No one is neutral about the Yankees. Those red Yankees hats say it all. Yankees fans are RS fans, and vice versa. City are just kidding themselves if they think they can make City fans out of Yankees fans.

(lights unfiltered Camel, pours cup of black coffee, and unsnaps anorak...)

Then... (someone turns lights out)

Interesting history of NYC sports teams. I'd like to hear more from someone who's from the City, but what I understand it all starts with baseball. Most American professional leagues divide intra-city rivals into separate leagues/divisions. In theory, this gives each team the best chance to succeed, but there is a significant loss of rivalry within the cities. But in early days there were three baseball teams in New York and the Giants and Dodgers (then Robins, among many other names) were in the same league. From 1910-1930, these three teams went to the World Series 15 times together (8-Giants, 5-Yankees, 2-Dodgers), with the Giants and Yankees facing each other three consecutive series (1921-1923) and a New York team in the World Series 13 out of 20 years.

The Giants played at the Polo Grounds (upper Manhattan) and shared with the Yankees, before the Yankees moved to the original Yankee Stadium (Bronx). The Dodgers played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. In 1957 the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco, both over a new stadium (they still hate each other). The Mets brought NL baseball back to New York in the 1960s, after Shea Stadium was built in Queens, but the Mets remain NYC's other team in the mind of many.

In the NFL, the NY (football) Giants are the original New York team, and shared Yankee Stadium before Giants Stadium was built in New Jersey. The Jets came around in the late 1950s and shared Polo Grounds and Shea Field, before sharing Giants Stadium with the Giants. Similar to the Mets, the Jets are NYC's other team in the mind of many. The Giants and Jets continue to share a ground at the Meadowlands, which remains in New Jersey*.

In basketball, few from NYC pay attention to any team other than the Knicks, which play at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The Nets (see a similarity in the names) were a New Jersey team until Jay Z moved them to Brooklyn a few years ago. I don't think the adoption will be quick, but eventually I think they'll be regarded as New York team. The Rangers are NYC's hockey team, and although the New Jersey Devils have been successful, they remain a New Jersey team and their supporters are largely face-painters. **

Which leads us to MLS and the Cosmos. Many remain loyal to the Cosmos, and while NYRB have been well-supported, they play in New Jersey. Will be interesting to see how fans support NYCFC, which will begin sharing a field with the Yankees before moving to Queens (as I understand).

Does it all make more sense now @ijjysmith?

*I should add that East Rutherford, New Jersey, is like the Kirkby of NYC.
**FFS, forgot about the Islanders. They had some boss teams in the 1980's.

I see what you did there. Good thing jDawg's a Chiefs guy.
@johnnydawg68

Don't want them to leave, but would probably end up being good for me because when the Cardinals left, STL adopted the Chiefs as the "hometown" team and every game was showed on TV. I could cancel my Sunday ticket package and save a fortune.

It was fun when the Rams were good and going to Super Bowls, but lately I barely notice they're here.

As long as it's not the Chiefs. I couldn't bear to think there's another person out there as tortured as me being an Evertonian and Chief. The Chiefs and I aren't really on speaking terms right now after their collapse down the stretch.

Disagree. From what I can tell The Giants are New Jersey's team, and the Jets are still New York's team even though they play in the same stadium. It's not unlike the Merseyside situation. I have no idea how a New Yorker picks one team or the other.

To dig even deeper into the Jets, one minor and one major point. First, there once was a NY Yankees football team in the old All-America Conference that played in Yankee Stadium, but never went on like many other AAFC teams did (Browns, 49ers). The roots of the Jets are in the New York Titans of the early AFL - they played in a decaying and empty Polo Grounds, and were run on a smile and old Tesco coupons until the AFL brought in some professional help at about the same time as the 1964 World's Fair. They brought in some money men one of whom was a marketing genius named Sonny Werblin who signed Joe Namath for an unheard of bonus of 400 large. Joe bought a mink coat, a bottle of Johnny Walker, and worked his way through all the girls in Manhattan a group at a time. Think George Best. That. Joe was as good as Georgie when he was good, too.

They played out at Shea, which was built at the site of the Fair in Flushing Meadow, and were the hip club of the 60's until it all went to heck in the 70's. NY pro football was bleak for a long time until the Giants won in the late 80's under the Tuna.

The Jets no doubt have the largest support of any of NYC's "second" teams, but I understand the Giants continue to lead among Gothamites.

In knowing the New Yorkers I know, the Jets best area is Long Island and North Jersey. Lots of New Yorkers out there, and each one has five opinions about everything. YMMV.
