It is insanely confusing - the Mets are basically the resurrection of what was the Giants in NY. The BB Giants moved to SF, and the Yankees and Giants (and Dodgers, too when there were three NY teams) were in different leagues when there was no interleague play. So the Dodgers and Giants were huge rivals in the National League and both moved to California at the same time sixty-five years ago to go on hating each other, while the Yankees were just in the other league winning every year no matter what.
Therefore everybody who isn't a Yankees fan hates them. No one is neutral about the Yankees. Those red Yankees hats say it all. Yankees fans are RS fans, and vice versa. City are just kidding themselves if they think they can make City fans out of Yankees fans.

Then... (someone turns lights out)
Interesting history of NYC sports teams. I'd like to hear more from someone who's from the City, but what I understand it all starts with baseball. Most American professional leagues divide intra-city rivals into separate leagues/divisions. In theory, this gives each team the best chance to succeed, but there is a significant loss of rivalry within the cities. But in early days there were three baseball teams in New York and the Giants and Dodgers (then Robins, among many other names) were in the same league. From 1910-1930, these three teams went to the World Series 15 times together (8-Giants, 5-Yankees, 2-Dodgers), with the Giants and Yankees facing each other three consecutive series (1921-1923) and a New York team in the World Series 13 out of 20 years.
The Giants played at the Polo Grounds (upper Manhattan) and shared with the Yankees, before the Yankees moved to the original Yankee Stadium (Bronx). The Dodgers played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. In 1957 the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco, both over a new stadium (they still hate each other). The Mets brought NL baseball back to New York in the 1960s, after Shea Stadium was built in Queens, but the Mets remain NYC's
other team in the mind of many.
In the NFL, the NY (football) Giants are the original New York team, and shared Yankee Stadium before Giants Stadium was built in New Jersey. The Jets came around in the late 1950s and shared Polo Grounds and Shea Field, before sharing Giants Stadium with the Giants. Similar to the Mets, the Jets are NYC's
other team in the mind of many. The Giants and Jets continue to share a ground at the Meadowlands, which remains in New Jersey*.
In basketball, few from NYC pay attention to any team other than the Knicks, which play at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The Nets (see a similarity in the names) were a New Jersey team until Jay Z moved them to Brooklyn a few years ago. I don't think the adoption will be quick, but eventually I think they'll be regarded as New York team. The Rangers are NYC's hockey team, and although the New Jersey Devils have been successful, they remain a New Jersey team and their supporters are largely
face-painters. **
Which leads us to MLS and the Cosmos. Many remain loyal to the Cosmos, and while NYRB have been well-supported, they play in New Jersey. Will be interesting to see how fans support NYCFC, which will begin sharing a field with the Yankees before moving to Queens (as I understand).
Does it all make more sense now
@ijjysmith?
*I should add that East Rutherford, New Jersey, is like the Kirkby of NYC.
**FFS, forgot about the Islanders. They had some boss teams in the 1980's.
