Is there a new story on this? I've been on the road, so out of the news a bit. But that's one reason I won't let my 8yo play.

Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist, has examined the brains of 202 deceased football players. A broad survey of her findings was published on Tuesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Of the 202 players, 111 of them played in the N.F.L. — and 110 of those were found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., the degenerative disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

Thanks. Also: duh. But, yes, we need the data to confirm what we already knew.

*also, weirdly enough I can probably thank CTE for my love of Everton

**make of that what you will

Worth noting that the brains tested were ones donated because the relatives of the player suspected they had suffered some kind of brain damage.

Yes, definitely some selection bias, but these are still really high numbers. I'm not aware that we have any baseline for the prevalence of CTE in the general population, but it's thought to be very low.
