NFL Thread

S'truth. Before the current run, Boston football history was summed up by one horrendous Super Bowl defeat (see Steve Grogan sitting on the ground with his helmet on sideways), Gino Cappelletti, and a nightclub fire in the '30's. And the romance of the old stadium... (cement on concrete on top of cement enclosing plastic turf - bring on that snowplow for the FG attempt)

Grogan... Eason going 0 fer the Superbowl... ugh. I moved to Arizona shortly before that run, so was surrounded by "Bears" fans. Still less painful than being surrounded by "Mets fans" a couple months later.

All the misery, whether absolute failure or snatching defeat from the jaws of victory has made the last 15 years so much sweeter, though.

I really like how the NFL portrays it's history and former players. I often thought that with Everton's own history we could take a leaf out of their book to promote the club and our heritage. I think this video is superb example of how a combination of history, storytelling and media can be used to engage potential fans. The playlist of the 100 greatest players is a great little time killer as well.

Question to the other NFL-a-holics. Do we want to start a yearly NFL thread like the MLB thread? We're dragging pages along like the Kopite ridicule thread or Sir Landon of Donovan by now.

Thoughts? If we start one, I think el Serenissimo should start it. @SerenityNigh

Seems reasonable

*Seems like we should do one for college football and NFL together, or keep these separate?

I would make a stronger case for supporting Tampa Bay but after they won the Super Bowl (15 years ago!) I just couldn't be arsed anymore. Best I can do now is semi-arsed. Think they'll do well this year.

Never in my life have I seen anyone that compares to Barry. Even Sweetness, who was similarly great, couldn't move laterally like Barry Sanders. I've never seen Sayers or Brown, so can't comment on these.

But another point you make on the filmaking--NFL Films is an icon unto themselves, and they created the "highlight" with their own NFL branded music. NFL highlights have a certain feel--just the right playtime, the right amount of motion on screen, and always that music that gets you in the mood to watch.

If you're not familiar with the Sabols, that's a story worth reading in itself: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/10/they-taught-america-to-watch-football/309083/

*sorry wrong vid, let's try again:
