Non League Football

I’m heading off to Belfast tomorrow night to watch my old club playing in the semi final of the Northern Ireland Junior Shield, taking the grand kids with me. Hopefully they win and go on to win the competition in what is their last year as a junior club. They are well placed for promotion which will take them up to intermediate level. You really do need a fall back position when you have been an Evertonian for 60+ years.

Non League Day happened at the weekend. A weekend which celebrates non league whilst there is an International break on.

I went to Lancaster Vs. Marine where my season ticket got me in for £5 and the biggest crowd for 10 years at Lancaster saw Marine run out 2-0 winners, which was quite comfortable, included a saved penalty at the end by the Marine goalkeeper.

Marine up to 3rd with a big week ahead; away to Matlock on Saturday before a big promotion clash with Warrington Rylands on the Monday.

Other Results for local sides included

Southport 2-2 Buxton - a good run of form has seen southport give themselves a cushion of the drop zone

Kidsgrove 0-2 Bootle
Prescot 1-0 Newcastle Town
Clitheroe 1-1 Runcorn
City of Liverpool 0-0 Hanley Town

Those 4 all currently occupy the playoff spots with 6 games remaining for all except Prescot who play Chasetown.

Bootle, Linnets & Prescot all have a 5+ point buffer on Witton in 6th place, with CoL ahead on superior goal difference only.

Big week ahead as Witton in 6th face the bottom two over Easter; the 4 playoff sides will all face each other on Easter Monday; last game of Season City of Liverpool vs. Witton so lots to play for in the NPL West.

A lovely ground the Giant axe. I have fond memories of it as I went to Uni at Lancaster. Used to go down there occasionally. Nice setting under the castle.

By far my favourite away of the season, tucked more or less in the centre, nest to station, some great pubs along the way and the locals are lovely.

They should be doing better and getting bigger crowds, big shame that.

I have two questions for you.

1. Could you kindly explain the play off structure at this level?

2. Is is true Marine can only go so far up the leagues because of their ground?

Great to see Marine do so well and make the most of that Spurs cash.

I've been going to Bootle more this season as a few of us make a day and night of it. I've genuinely not seen them win, or even play that well but their away from since the new manager came in has been terrific. Considering I have a season ticket for Everton I'm starting to think I might be the problem.

Would be great to see Bootle and Marine both go up.

I need to get to Lancaster some time myself. Mrs is from up near the lakes so it's not too long a train ride whenever I'm up there.

1. Playoff system as follows

Tuesday following end of the season 2nd vs. 5th, 3rd Vs. 4th, highest ranked side remaining then hosts playoff final on Bank Holiday Monday in May.

If season finished now, it would mean that Runcorn Vs. CoL, Prescot Vs. Bootle.

The winner goes into the Northern Premier League.

2. It is true, Marine are limited by the stadium restriction, but for whatever reason, non-Marine fans keep telling me it's this level, and that's that.

simply not true. Marine have capability to reach national league proper if they ever reach that high, just needs some minor tweaks to stadium. Roof is going on far end (partially) in the summer, scoreboard going up, and added hospitality area.

Whilst it would be great to see Marine reach the football league, the use of the 3G pitch is very valuable and would almost serve as counter productive.

Ironically, every time ive seen Bootle (competively) theyve always won.

Love seeing local sides doing well, it would be lovely to see another local side in the NPL next season if Marine don't go up, our festive game was highly lacking this season, we ended up in Derbyshire.

Ground at Lancaster bit basic, but only an hour on the train, a good day out.

We go to the Lancaster Royal Theatre with my little fella quite a bit and stop over at the beautiful Toll House Inn.

I`ve grown to really like the place and the area to the West of it on the coast.

Went to Park view road to see Welling sneak the win 1-0) against Dover. They appear to be in free fall having been relegated twice now.
Welling should be safe now but some teams have 4-5 games extra to play so it's mathematically possible that several teams could go down.

I went to Bootle yesterday and watched Bootle concede in 95th minute; to draw 1-1 with Trafford.

To say Bootle are 4th and have a bit of space before missing our on playoffs, thought they were poor barring the goalkeeper, Tony Thompson who went off injured after bravely getting stuck in a 50/50. Bootle then impressively played 35/40 mins with an out fielder in goal.

The lad who scored, Hodkinson, if he had consistency with his end product would be at a much higher level.

As a neutral of that's how Bootle play week in week out; it's truly a poor NPLW this season.

Good Luck to Bootle for the rest of the season.

Might aswell do local non league recap of Saturday, incase anyone is at a loose end today; and looking for something to do.

I went to Matlock on Saturday (over Bournemouth, wisely), where just over 1,000 saw Marine beat Matlock 1-0 with a first half goal by Sol Solomon.

Other local results saw

Prescot Cables draw 1-1 away to fellow playoff hopefuls Clitheroe, in what could be a huge result for them.

City of Liverpool beat Mossley 1-0 away; with Witton losing 3-0 away to Hednesford, it means their gap to nearest side outside the playoffs is now 3 points; with a +20 goal difference.

Upcoming today is the traditional local rivalry round in the NPL, With southport and Chester also playing.

National League North

Southport Vs. Scunthorpe
Chester vs. Alfreton

Northern Premier League

Warrington Rylands Vs. Marine - 2nd vs. 4th in a hugeplayoff bout at the top of the table.

Northern Premier League West

City of Liverpool Vs. Bootle
Prescot Cables Vs. Runcorn Linnets
Widnes Vs. Vauxhall Motors

5th vs. 4th in Ellesmere Port; 2nd vs. 3rd in Prescot.
