Old cars

Most of my cars have had SUs - and I love them. Far less trouble than other carbs I've had.
Were they singles or doubles on a Vee - mine were always going out of balance on the V8 rover, bugger of a job to set them up - could've been me with no patience though.
I went as far as getting 2 twinchoke webers off cortinas in a scrap yard - the usual trick of pay for 1 and 1 in your pocket lol
Then I got side tracked and never made the adapter plate to fit them on.
Still probably on a long lost 'to do' list somewhere as I haven't had the car for 15yrs and move countries too.

…. rarely drive these days because we walk everywhere, plus my vision still isn’t great after a detached retina op last October. Recently exchanged one that was 3 years old and had less than 5k on the clock. Crazy really.

As for old cars, the best ones I had were the XR2. I had a number of those & always found them fun to drive.

They've always been doubles. I rebuilt the pair on my Midget about 20 years ago and set them up all balanced. They've remained balanced ever since. Maybe you had a bad one in your pair.

This is on over the weekend - I am thinking of going on Sunday. Three lovely routes from Kilkenny over the Comeragh Mountains, via Clonmel or via Carrick on Suir, or the Knockmealdown mountains via Cahir. The latter is longest but the views over the Vee and the wild Rhododendron at this time of the year are spectacular.

It will be my first proper run this year as I have been laid up with a chronic back and sciatica problem for months. It will be either the Merc 300 SE or the Rover SD1 V8.

That sounds a great day out and a wonderful route there too.
There's an enormous show near me at South Cerney airfield, Cirencester first weekend of August, with classics, steam engines, buses, military and colossal auto jumble. Even though its only 6 miles away I camp there the weekend. Can't wait. I've really missed it over the last two covid years.

This was a run we did in early 2020, showing some of the views from the Vee looking down into the Golden Vale of Co Tipperary. It is a pathe through the Knockmealdown Mountains from Co Tipperary into Co Waterford

Kilkenny Motor Club will hold its first Annual Show since 2019 - delighted that this very popular event is finally back.

Wonderful. I did a camping tour of Eire in the mid 90s with my MG Midget (still got it!). Headed to Templederry in the centre, where my mum was born, then onto the Dingle peninsular and back along the south coast via Cork. Camped last night on a fishing village where the chippy had no fish - only chicken and chips lads, but it did have 2" of water on the floor due to the storm that raged. I was tarving and just glad it was open. Some welfare bod with a badge from the council would've closed it down if were here.
Beautiful country.

Murphy's Law strikes. I washed the Merc this morning and took her out for a short spin. Very short!! Just a mile from home and it came to a noisy halt. Luckily my mechanic is only another 400m from where it happened- his initial diagnosis is either a stone got into the wheel housing or ball bearing problems.

Thankfully he doesn't think it's the transmission.

Thank God it didn't happen 75 miles from home on Sunday!!

So, Plan B is the Rover. Plan C the 1972 Peugeot 504 Coupe.

Hope its a cheap fix. Failed bearing is easy enough.

This is the 1972 Peugeot - Pinifarina designed. I love her as does Mrs BR - this was a family run last summer along the River Barrow (second longest river in Ireland) through Cos Kilkenny and Carlow and this was at the beautiful ancient monastic village of St Mullin's. Great fun to drive and is the only one without power steering - still, it takes me back to when I first was driving - my first four cars had no power steering. My first with PS was in 1995.
