Further to the Keith Newton comments above, here's Keith on the day he joined us from Blackburn. At the time his signing looked perfect: a polished footballing full-back who was outstanding both for Blackburn and England. He could play both on the right and left side. Never produced his best form for us. He says, with some justification, that the Catt told him off for dwelling on the ball when looking to pass it from the back; HC wanted him to knock it long for Joe Royle. I certainly remember him being caught in possession a fair few times!
Went on to rediscover his best form at Burnley.
Remains a mystery to me why he didn't succeed here and left-back became a problem position for us until Gordon Lee made Michael Pejic his first signing shortly after taking over. Pep would pay £50 million for a player like him today!

this looks like it could be Royle scoring against Coventry in the FA Cup Jan 69. Can anyone confirm
It could be, no caption on that picture it's from a rare book My good lady snapped up for me on a car boot - I have a large collection of blues books old , and new!
