Old Everton Pictures

Alan Ball piggy backs on the GV - who its recorded helped him to decide to choose the Blues over Leeds as he wanted to play with the admired GV - to see them play together in a short period was a joy to me -

Well spotted keepers without gloves - mind you Gordon West revealed he paid for his own in a sports shop other than club issue.....

Could be because the "goalkeeper" in the photograph is really a centre half, Dennis Smith. The regular Stoke goalkeeper John Farmer was injured in a collision with "Big Joe" and carried off with injured ribs. Dennis Smith took over in goal and Everton punished him going on to win 6-2. The photo is Ball scoring the sixth and final goal.

Joey, I have fond memories of my Mum taking me to meet Joe when he was signing copies of 'Royle Flush', his first autobiography, written when he was about 20! Still got it.

My Mum, who knew nothing about football, was very enamoured with young Joe, who already had all the warmth and charm that became apparent in his managerial career. She rated him only slightly behind Paul Newman!

Got that book obviously - Great story the way about your Mum - he became my hero was the way he got treated by the older fans on the terraces when he first hit the team - on here they would have wrote him off in todays game .... I just knew he was learning , and the goals would flow , and I was correct - not a bad team around him like -he was our one up front but with Moggsy and Husband , and then Whittle they were all deadly propted of course by the Holy Trinity.....
ages after I got married and eventually moved away form Liverpool to pursue my career My late father who died young - as a kid I had helped him to decorate - He always let me use a black crayon to scroll large on the plaster the team players names of the eras - very later on My late mother got decorators in - as they stripped the wallpaper exclaimed who the hell where these players - probably reds......

Here's Joes 100th goal for the Blues -
20th August 1974 Joe Royle nets from the penalty spot for his 100th goal for the club as he scores against Stoke -ina 2-1 win joe netting twice -

Sorry not sure of your age, did you see him play live?
Yes I certainly did from the age of 6 years old 1963 - the defining moment was when Bally came here - he moved to the wing no 7 to accommodate Joe Royle - to see Bally and the master in tandem the GV will stick in my mind forever , and the Gladwys Street admiration for him was tremendous - banners galore etc he was special ......
Roy Vernon, and the GV were a special combination too - Vernon always admired when he got wet he looked a shrimp of a player he was lethal with both feet , and only missed one pen out of many - maybe he got overlooked a wee bit because of the GV......

Wow, thanks for that. I only got to see the great 80's team in action. Some special times though that 60's lot. Holy Trinity etc..

Very hard to compare the two teams different eras etc - It was a shame how the late 1960's team broke up - I went to a lot of away games as I got older - the Holy trinity where they over hyped = NO to be away and be goals up at half time, and the away fans clapping them off in some grounds will stick in my mind the football was telepathic - Colin Harvey who was involved as a player and an assistant Manager leaned towards the Holy trinity team as they only need 3 midfielders where as in the great 1980's sides we operated with four midfielders - imo Both were great sides and the 1980's team were trophy wise much more successful, but technically the Holy Trinity had to be seen to be believed!
