Old Everton Pictures

Was at that match. 5-0 win for Everton. George Best made a guest appearance for Linfield. (Not stated on the programme). I suppose people had to.wait to see if Best would even turn up.... He only played the first half. And hit the bar with a long range shot. He showed some nice touches.......but you could see he was finished.
Think it was 0-0 at half time. But Everton (a mixture of first teamers.....and guys on trial) turned it on.in the second half.
I played against Peter Dornan and Linfield once. They hammered us. They were a class above my level......

A photo of our first FA cup final win in 1906 vs Newcastle at Crystal Palace Stadium, very limited detail but you can see the colours we were wearing were lightish tops (presumably amber and white shorts)

Just as an add-on to this and for those interested in the venue for most of the late 19th century finals, and that of our first ever triumph in the early 20th century (1906), this little piece about the crystal palace stadium is fascinating with two stunning images - the colour one is obviously not a photo, but the black and white photo of Spurs scoring in the 1901 final shows the unusual pitch markings near the goal, there was no four straight sided penalty box and six yard box as there is today, but rather a hockey like semi circle around the goal mouth and a rugby style straight line across the pitch a bit further out.

In the colour image the old all glass Crystal Palace Exhibition centre can be seen to the left of the image, in the background.

Kennington Oval cricket ground was used for the even earlier ones in the 1870's and Goodison, Stamford Bridge and Fallowfield, Manchester all did the odd one.

Kennington Oval cricket ground staged almost every FA Cup final from the first in 1871/72 for around 20 years until 1892/93

Then it moved briefly away from London as the crowds were getting just too large for the cricket ground to accommodate, (32,000) attended the last final at the Oval in 1881/92, the next two were at Fallowfield in Manchester and Goodison until it moved back to it's then new permanent home in London at Crystal Palace Park in 1894/95

Other grounds used as one offs were Lillie Bridge Sports ground (1873) near Fulham (West Brompton), Derbyshire cricket ground 'called the racecourse ground' (1886), Burden Park Bolton in 1901 for the replay after a drawn first match at Crystal Palace, then Goodison, Old Trafford and Bramall Lane were all used as replay venues in 1910, 1911 and 1912, the last ever final at Crystsl Palace being held two years later in 1913/14 when Burnley beat Liverpool 1-0.

Stamford Bridge then did it aside from one year when Chelsea were finalists when it was held at Old Trafford, until it moved to it's new permanent home of the old Wembley Stadium in 1922/23

That was one fantastic building sadly burnt down as a ciggerettes was accidentally dropped under the wooded floors the solid cast iron structures were decimated .......fans think the final, were at the Cystal,Palace football ground not by the great exhibition pavilion when we were a power in invention plus major industries ........it would have lasted forever only one flaw the wooden floor wit little gaps in the beams ......

1901 we played there and won the Cup this was in the background - a magnificent structure supposed to last forever........
By the early years of the 20th century the venue was established as the home of the FA Cup. In 1905-06 Everton won their first major honour by beating Newcastle United by a goal to nil. The Toffees were defeated the following year, going down 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday, while Wolves completed the double in 1907-08 by inflicting Newcastle United's third FA Cup Final defeat in four years. Crystal Palace Park did not seem to favour the Magpies.
