Old Photos Of Where You Live

…old team mate of mine was Jimmy Case, I think he played for Blue Union of a Sunday. Best striker of a football I have ever seen.
I use to play against the Blue Union tough team, I played for the Metal Box in the business league on a Saturday

And Speke Argyle in the Liverpool Sunday league, remember mad Harold

I went there off and on when finances allowed...aka, pestering my Gran or Da for 6d to get rid of me.
And latterly when we were away and the funds didn’t run to anfield prices.

The first time I ever went was as a nipper in 1954 on a cold November night to watch a 'Nigerian Select 11' playing in bare feet under Floodlights.
13,000 crammed into that little ground.*

*
Possibly one of the first Floodlit games on Merseyside - though Interweb sources differ on this...and, as we know, if it's on the Interweb it  Must be right - right?

The Official record states 1949 and I can find no mention of the 1954 game.

Let's just say that although some recollections may vary, I know where I was and what I saw.

Anybody with better Data Mining skills than me (most people) feel free to knock you selves out.
The Truth is Out There...somewhere...maybe.

Edit; I also was at the Puskas Charity game that some enterprising soul put together - Famous Names galore.
And when South played Ron Yeats's Tranmere in the FA Cup, with local lad 'Yosser' (obvs) Hughes...on that picture...playing for The South.

….terrific memories, thanks for posting. I have a vague recollection of seeing some pics of the ‘Nigeria‘ game but 1954 was before I was born. I think Holly Park was regularly used for testimonial games etc, the picture of Dixie Dean ’kicking off’ a game is often posted in the Old Pictures thread.

I played there in about 1971 when I was selected for ‘Liverpool Catholic Schoolboys’ to play Manchester equivalent. I never knew such a side existed, I just got a letter informing I’d been selected. The irony is I wasn’t Catholic, so I took the letter to my headmaster & told him the situation. He told me I was representing the school and that I had to play. Funny, I recall the game was on St Patrick’s Day, it finished 0-0 & I still have the medal somewhere.

…lovely, modest lad was John O’Leary, had the privilege of playing against him and being in his company at times. Never looked like a footballer, wasn’t built to play but unbelievable technical ability. Sadly no longer with us. I’m sure he worked for Otis in Kirkby & famously was mentioned by Bobby Charlton in his autobiography.

I had a trail with Liverpool school boys at Penny lane, got down to the last 16 unfortunately never made it

But I remember some great payers back in the day

…I was fortunate to play & scored 25 goals in 19 competition games for them. Still proud of that record.

Distinctly remember one of the Penny Lane trials as John Bailey was in my team. Everything was very serious but he was so enthusiastic he scored a header and went berserk. We vaguely knew each other because we lived relatively close, got the 46 bus home from Penny Lane. Remember him asking ‘do you think we’ll get in’. He didn’t but he did ok for himself.

1892 Homestead Steel Strike. Noted @#$%bag Andrew Carnegie, demanded a 20% pay cut, the workers rebelled, there was a shootout w/ Pinkertons and when the Pinkertons weren't enough the state militia (below) was called in.

I grew up about a 1 mile behind the smog in the picture.

Thanks to the state militia eventually the strike ended months later w/ the Final Score: Carnegie 52 Workers 7.
130 years later things aren't any better for unions here.

Carnegie (and his personal Stephen Miller, Henry Clay Frick) have their grotesque names plastered on everything in and around Pittsburgh.

I went to a game at Holly Park that Dixie kicked off, I don’t know if it’s the one you mentioned. Ken Dodd brought him on the pitch in a wheelbarrow, I’m sure it involved Alex Young and my Uncle Tom was the ref.

The Wirral Show...

Always a cracking day out. Stunt shows, airplanes, motorbike shenanigans, army there with assault courses, soggy chips, extremely dodgy fairground rides, shops selling the best tat for kids. I remember one year a Harrier turned up, and hovered just off the prom above the water, and tbe water just bowled below it.

Brilliant.

Used to have the Promenade stages too. Metro 6R4's, quattros, cossies, etc,all blasting about round the dips.

Brilliant.

Played for Speke Town , Cheshire lines , Dove & Olive , Business house lge and a few Old Boys.
Great days and lots of very good footballers around.
Best player I ever played with was Kenny Owen brilliant winger only for 2 broken legs would have been fantastic.

@Eggs knew Jimmy and his wife Lana in those days , went to school with Frank Case
Small world mate.
