Old Photos Of Where You Live

I was there during the final throes of its life.
Shuttled to Breckfield for dinner, walking between Collegiate and Breckfield for lessons, it was ridiculous tbh.
Was there for the Leonard Rossiter prize giving though. Will always remember that.
I’m a bit older than you then! I left in 1979. Shame the way it ended up

Every Sunday.
A death trap some of the one bed flats.
The lifts worked, but very dimly lit.
Never bothered the pensioners that lived there.
I lived by the water tower growing up by St. John chrysostoms the local shop was a mobile van,we were moved by the council when they flattened the block we lived in,my mum refused to move until she got we’re she wanted we were the last to leave surrounded by 3 empty blocks, we got a house we’re my mum still lives my mates family mum dad 3 kids moved here to gleave sq it could be scary in them lifts always breaking.

YouI was there from 81 until it closed. Council left it to rot. Terrible end for a once iconic school.

I left in 1966, it was still a top school then, (despite my efforts...or lack of)
tbh, there were a few of the Pink Floyd 'Brick in the wall' board duster throwers.
But I was also taught by genuine Legends; French by Fat White, Physics by Mary Hill (Dr Ruths  Very evil sister) 4ft 11in of pure terror and I can still quote Boyles Law to this day. No problems with classroom discipline in  Her classes - however big and tough you thought  You were.

KA Croft was Headmaster, Woodwood vip...who gave me 3 of the cane for bunking off on Friday afternoon (with the obligatory forged note on Monday) to go and queue for a Cup Final ticket at Goodison with my collection of programme vouchers.
When it was all over he asked me did you get one, yes sir i said and whipped it out of my Inside pocket. He looked at it, handed it back and said, well I hope they win then - now bugger off.

He, Woodwood, ( no mean figure of power and schoolboy terror himself) of also said on a different occasion about Mary Hill..."to be honest, she frightens me a bit too."
Back then Nobby Clark(e?) was just a buckshee sports master, of the Kes-lite type...very far from the top table.
It was a different time. The Area, The City...the whole World seemed to be changing in those few years.
Lennon nailed it.
There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

….love the cup final story. Collegiate was a fabulous school but one that was probably too posh for competitive football, despite Brian Labone.

I went to John Hamilton in the 60s when it was a High School. Teachers and 6th formers wore gowns, it was boys only. I loved it. One day a football club came to the school with my father and went to the Headmaster for permission to talk with me. So different protocols in those days. I got the rest of the day off.

As I was leaving it transitioned to Breckfield Comp which I assume is what @tommye referred to.

We had decent Football, Rugby and Cricket, Swimming, Athletics teams and all sport was all taken seriously
We weren't one of those school that dropped football and 'only' played 'rugger'...yes, looking at you St Edwards to name but one...

Posh? Nah I'd say we had expected standards of behaviour that weren't too much, if at all, out of touch with the normal standards of the day.

Entry wasn't based where you lived or how much money your Dad had, it was based on the brains you were born with...how much you prospered was based on how well you applied yourself...
'From each according to his ability' ??
I was an exception that proved the rule - a rebel without a clue, but that was down to me

I had mates who lived all over the city from Calderstones to Croxteth, calling at all Stations (in the other sense of the word) in between.

In fact I'd contend that the then grammar school selection process made it fair for all...
'To each according to his needs'??

But Posh? Nah.

Anyway back to posting nostalgic pics
