12 October 1915 English nurse Edith Cavell was executed by firing squad.
When Germany entered Brussels in August 1914 Edith Cavell was working as a Matron at a Red Cross Hospital.
The Germans offered her and other Nurses safe conduct to Holland, but she refused and stayed tending to Allied soldiers wounded in the opening days of the 1st World War. She was arrested in August 1915 and admitted the charges brought aganst her (that she had helped some 200 British and French POW's and Belgian civilians to escape to Holland)

On this date in 1805 Admiral Horatio Nelson won a battle (Trafalgar) but lost his life.
A French sniper fired from the mizentop of 'The Redoubtable'. The musket ball entered Nelsons left shoulder and passed through his lung and into his spine.
His body was put into a barrel of Brandy until after the battle. His ship 'The Victory' was then towed to Gibralta where the body was transfered to a lead lined coffin.
