2024/25 Orel Mangala

What other central midfielders have we had that come off a pitch when were defending most of the game against City and theyve not won a tackle? Not won an aerial and won 33% of their ground duels?

None?

How many times was he expected to compete aerially?

What was the context surrounding his ground duels?

How many tackles has he been required to make and what constitutes a tackle.

Sometimes a players positioning means that they're marking their man out of the game, meaning they're not available for the pass to them, or they're not able to compete for the header.

One of the most effective defensive midfield performances I have ever seen was Phil Neville completely shutting out Viera in Arsenal v United. I haven't looked at the stats for that game, mostly cause that's virgin behaviour, but I'd guess that they would make for worse reading than watching the actual game.

I think he's a decent player.

Come in and done a decent holding job alongside Gana.

His signing was very much needed considering Garner and Tim have been unavailable for months so would've been really struggling there if no one had been signed.

Not sure I'd be committing 30m or so to make it a permanent but see how the rest of the season goes I guess.

Currently I would have him for £15m - £20m. He brings passing accuracy (not all sideways or back passes). Can tackle, Can put us on front foot, not wasteful, can shoot from distance, composed and calm. May not have pace but how many midfielders do. On the subject of pace, if he has no pace then he is making up for it in passing accuracy and reading of the game as most PL midfielders do. He is decent, not great yet not bad. Looks to me that he has solidified the midfield

He's 26.
It's the blend, Gana jabbing about like an angry hornet, all energy and sly interceptions and snide one foot tackles, Doucoure is the water carrier, big physique - battle for headers get a foot in where he can, Mangala in the mix looking for the easy ball that let's both the others off the hook. With adequate fullbacks our wide players would be more available for him to spread the play towards and then let us pressure certain opposition defenders.
Dyche is cautious, it's the same issue as for Moyes, it's easy being adventurous when you have a team of elite stars, going gung-ho like Bielsa's leeds is great for entertainment, and it means extra games the season later in the championship with a streak of losses 4-3 and 5-2.

PL survival means liquidity for the club. Cannot be jeopardised. He's managing to a budget and a desire to guarantee safety. Just like Moyes had to.

all wrong for various and similar reasons. Silva and Ancelotti come through with differing credit. All six had money to throw around with varying degrees of success. It took us over a decade of recovery under Moyes to be close to relevant again, and the shysters burned his stability because they didn't care a bit.
"Phenomenal". Get knotted fraud. The fat one (not sam) was the final insult.

Good post but disagree with the highlighted part. I think mangala looks for forward passing but only if it is on and inevitably it is not on due to lack of movement

He has obvious quality in possession. Very strong on the ball, takes up good positions, has a great weight of pass and chooses good options. Currently one of our best players along with Pickford, Branthwaite and N'Diaye.

Prefer onana but that just me thought always had more to give loved the stretching tackles to win the ball back, and when he would carry the ball. But just my view still rate mangala and agree with you, for me is seeing how he turns up against forest when we need to be on the front foot. Same as gana for me i would be looking to keep both for next season if price right

they were both starting games together for belgium

What most see:

Accurate passes 35/38 92%
Chances created 0
XG 0.07
XGOT 0
Expected assists 0.01
XG + XA = 0.08
Shot accuracy 0/2 0%
Successful dribbles 2
Accurate long balls 1/2 50%
Duels won 2

What I see:

DUELS LOST 4
TACKLES WON 0%
AERIALS WON 0%
DISPOSESSED 2

Its Gomes all over again imo.

what you see - something none of us do

Mangala’s job wasn’t to tackle today, do that against City and you give away free kicks and you lose a body in midfield when they pass it around you. His job was to sit and block their passing lines and play it short when in possession. For me he did his job well. What my eyes saw and what the stats say are consistent.

I've said several times the same, that he sits and is composed with his short passes.

Thats all ive seen from him, nothing more that stands out. Nothing to make up for his obvious weaknesses.

What do you think happens once a player gets past him, he's out of the game? Because for me he wont be able to get back if the system is anything other than deep.

So, playing him we will be constrained as we will have to setup in a way that allows him to sit deep and be protected.

I'm seeing multiple posters say they want to play on the front foot & also that they want to sign Mangala.

That makes no sense.
