Sometimes a players positioning means that they're markihgbtheor man out of the game, meaning they're not available for the pass to them, or they're not able to compete for the header.

One of the most effective defensive midfield performances I have ever seen was Phil Neville completely shutting out Viera in Arsenal v United. I haven't looked at the stats for that game, mostly cause that's virgin behaviour, but I'd guess that they would make for worse reading than watching the actual game.
