I'm not sure but I would guess it's for the homegrown quota in the squad. You don't have to register youth players in a Premier League squad so they can play anyway. Might be wrong on that though

To be fair I thought Phillips looked decent, the rs would be better keeping him, otherwise with 1 injury at centre half they'll be back in the same position as last season.
