Do not get that Bent deal.

£4mill? Nah. Have him on loan instead .

Does not make sense.

I'd imagine there could still be a fee near enough the million mark for the loan, and if the move works out they'll still have to pay the £4m next year.

I'd say Lambert is glad to have him away from the squad, and Villa off the wage bill.

He's hardly played for a year, so his value will be low. Maybe they're thinking that if he does the business for Fulham on loan that they'll be able to ask for more like what they think he's really worth? If he bangs them in for the Cottagers and makes the World Cup squad he might be an £8-£10m player next summer. Plus they get him off the wage bill and take a loan fee in the meantime. If it doesn't work out then they won't lose too much if they have to sell him for sub-£4m next year.

He'll be out of contract next summer won't he?

He'll be a year older. I'm guessing in a last year of his contract by the end of this season. His value will either stay the same or even lower imo.

Add to the fact Villa will probably be hovering around the relegation zone again, they've only got 3 strikers - two of which aren't prolific - and they've given a kinda rival a striker who, with Berbatov along side him, could easily slot 15 goals this season.

Benteke gets injured. Villa are done. Should've taken the money.

I still think he's got a contract that has probably that many bonus and clauses, Villa don't want to trigger. So they wanna wind his contact doqn

He'll be 30 before next summer. His career average isn't too far short of 1 in 2 and the last time he played a full season he scored 24 league goals. If he can get anywhere near 15 goals I think that there are clubs who would be willing to pay £6m+ for him, which is 50% more than is on the table at the moment.

I can only presume that Lerner has decided to have a massive cut back on wages and he's trying to do it stealthily by instructing the manager not to play senior pros like Bent, Dunne, Given and Ireland in the hope that they move on. They got away with it by the skin of their teeth last year and the ploy hasn't been very successful because the old hands just sat back and carried on collecting their wages.

It's a strange situation and I imagine that it will cause Villa long-term damage.

I'm quietly confident Villa will end up comfortably in mid-table
Their form towards the end of the season was very good, their young players more confident and composed (their thrashing of Sunderland a highlight).
It was a brave move offloading all the old high-earners, which easily could have ended with relegation, but what they've done now is totally restructured the club's current wage-structure, and made themselves a team of young improving talents. I'd love Everton to do this (albeit in a more staggered way).
As for losing Bent, not the biggest loss for them considering that they chose not to play him last season anyway when Benteke wasn't available- due to the fact that his contract was so bloody exorbitant. His appearance fee was allegedly outrageous. So they're used to not having him as an option, and I personally Andreas Weiman is going to have a particularly good season.

Totally forgot Ireland was still there
