He's a cult figure, he's our very own jester, he's the hero we deserve.

He has done no damage. Stuff happens. A signing didnt work out, so what?

When did we all become so precious? How DARE we sign a player that didnt work out? No other club has ever done that!
Displaying rank incompetence in the transfer market seems like it would be damaging, actually. How can we expect to sign Axel Witsel, a real player, from Zenit when we've given Locomotiv 13 million for a pretend player 6 months previously? They probably asked for a billion pounds, on a pro-rata basis.
This isn't a square peg in a round hole situation, like di Maria at Utd or something like that. Or a case of having to deal with shady clubs because you desperately need a proven player. We've shovelled millions of pound into Putin's personal bank account for a player who couldn't get a game in the Norwegian league.

You're right that worrying about our club's transfer dealings is precious behaviour in general, because let's face it - life's too short. This one, though, is just off the scale.

All a bit unnecessary in my opinion.

He still needs flogging to another club, hanging him out to dry like this is hardly gonna do his potential transfer fee any favours.
I think the fact he was offered moves to play football and chose to stay purely for his sizeable wage probably didn't do him any favours.

Perhaps it is slightly unnecessary how he's apparently flogging him to the media (and I don't mean trying to sell him), but hey ho.

Koeman has made it clear that he will not be an option under his tenure, so he needs to make a decision between football and money.

I am a firm believer in deserving your place, this means working hard and setting an example.
I have no real idea what goes on in training and what his overall attitude is. I hear he stayed because of his wages, it could be he wants to fight for his place....nobody really knows.

If he gets his head down in training and shows he is worth a chance, then he should get the chance

Sadly from what I have seen that seems a long way away as he doesn't seem to possess the basics

He is not a pretend player though, he is an international player (for what that is worth these days) who was playing at a decent standard. What he did in Norway is irrelevant really as he did well in Turkey and Russia. Obviously they are not top, top standard but its not the Beazer Homes League either. Witsel has never played at a higher level league wise either to be fair.

So one bad signing shows rank incompetence? He did make good signings too. Name me one manager who hasnt made a bad signing? Even the likes of Ferguson did them.

Its just a transfer that didnt work out. As I said, it happens. The way he has been treated shows more of a personality problem than anything for me. I reckon Martinez looked at him and saw something that he could work with, obviously he didnt get the chance to do so and I really dont get the impression that the player has helped himself either.

Just to clarify by the way I dont rate him myself from the little I have seen of him, I just find the treatment of him to have been quite frankly a bit disturbing. Us actually signing him and it not working out hasnt damaged us at all really. Its just something that happens at every club at some time.

Has that actually happened though? I thought the only concrete offer was from Galatasaray. The Hull one was just rumoured wasnt it?

If it was a loan then surely we would just pay his wages if we had to.

I can't confirm if it has occurred, however Koeman has appeared to insinuate that there were offers yet for whatever reason he chose to stay.

And yes we most probably would pay his wages, but there's a 'earn your wages by playing somewhere' or 'earn them sitting in the reserves'.

If it's clear that he is not going to be selected under Koeman then it may boil down to whether he does wish to actually play football or not.

Bit of balance. He signed in January and is probably on a decent whack, say 50k? Why would he want to be shipped out to some random club for potentially less money a week?

Also, golden boy Gueye speaks highly of him and he's helped him settle in so he can't be that much of a bell.

The fella is absolutely mince at football, but none of this mess is his fault.

Koeman undermining the player in pressers doesn't help anyone and ultimately will cost the club money

Disagree - it sends the message that he won't tolerate crap footballers. That helps the group of players at the club understand they need to be good enough for Koeman's standards to play and better themselves financially, which is all they ultimately care about.

Fair enough, but every time Koeman talks negatively about him, his value plummets even further. He's probably worth about -£6 by now.

Personally, before the transfer window closed, I'd have said something like: " Oumar's training well, has talent but doesn't really fit into our system". All a load of BS, but at least it might have enabled the club to get rid and recoup a few million.

Of course. I'm probably wrong and he's just digging his heels in and Koeman is fed up.

OK mate I guess we just see this on different levels of badness. I'd say Bilyaletdinov was an example of a transfer that just didn't work out, and you can't put this fella in the same category as that.
Comes down to the eyeball test really - Witsel has never played in a top league, as you say, but he looks like a footballer whenever I've seen him. Bilyaletdinov was horribly ineffective for us, a bad buy, but clearly a footballer - just one of dem things lad. Little I've seen of Niasse and he looks championship level max - this is supported by two of our managers not even giving him a cup of tea at Goodison (including the one who bought him!)
