£17mill plus 100k a week wages when he was still hot property.

I'm hoping he's hungry for footy if he comes to us and takes a pay cut. If he was wanting a pay-day he'd bugger off abroad.

The top 4 wont want him, Villa dont really need him, and Everton is his boyhood club. He's 30 now and has about another 2 seasons in him so he'll want to go to a club that will give him high profile football outside the sky 4.

If he came it would do the club wonders media and image wise. He's a name and still has quality. People are just getting the injuries in the way of judgement, which is strange when we have Saha, Yak, Anichebe, Vaughan, Fellaini and Cahill who are all proven goalscorers (maybe not the 2 young lads like).

Pro's: Has a high work rate, good finisher, good header of the ball, helps out the defence when necessary, Free!

Con's: Some would say injury prone, high wages, ex-liverpool.

To be quite honest i think he is over his injuries, and im known on here for loving him, and he would be great.

My god, I would not go near the lad.

Look at his record - his last season at the ****e, injury and failure at Real and even worse at Newcastle....

It could be a confidence thing with Owen, and there is not doubt that he was a great striker and would still have a fair bit to offer if he was confident again - and Moyes would be the man. But I heard off somebody who was talking to an Adidas rep for work a few years ago (yeah I know, the old I heard this this guy, who knows this guy blah blah) that Adidas had cut Owens sponsorship deal because basically he would never be able to play a full season again.....and guess what....

We don't need anymore injury prone players. Vaughan and Saha are enough...plus we don't know how well Mikel and Jags will return. We don't have a massive load of cash to take gambles. I don't see Owen improving what we already have in the team. Yak will be first choice with one of Vaughan/Felli/Cahill in support....so he wouldn't even start that much. 55k a week is a lot for a sub...

Bring back Rideout...

er..actually....

Just seen this post on Bluekipper, sums it up for me really.

Surely if Owen comes on a freebie then it's worth having a look at and taking on even with his injury record of late. He could have easily signed a further contract for Newcastle, they were willing to make him put pen to paper back in January and he could have got a similar amount of money (£80k a week wasn't it?), if Owen is willing to drop to a level consistent of what Everton pays and receive a nice signing on fee (which means more money left for other players as it would only be a million or two) then it has got to be seen as good business. Yes he is not as fast as he once was but instead of dwelling on the negatives (as so often most of you all do) lets look at the positives:

1) Raise the profile of Everton FC both home and abroad.
2) Help the younger players learn (he's still got movement and can find a few yards through his experience)
3) Natural goal scorer and can find the net more often than not when given a shooting opportunity.
4) Can change our system more successfully than we currently can from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 and give opposition something to think about when he comes onto the field.
5) Professional of the utmost calibre and someone who would fit into Moyes's criteria of how a footballer should conduct himself.

If Owen was all about money then he would have stayed at Newcastle, Owen is in the twilight of his career no doubting that, but as far as i can see he still has plenty to offer and if he wants to come back to the club he supported as a lad and kick a football about for the next 2/3 years playng for Everton, I for one would whole heartedly support him. Jo will not be staying, Anichebe may well be on his way, we can't afford another big money signing for a front player this year and it's a position that needs some extra legs (even if they are a little bit knackered), potentially we could have Yak, Saha, Owen, Vaughan and maybe Anichebe (with back up from Cahill and Fellaini if all get long term injuries again). I think that's a pretty good forward line for home and abroad this coming year, Moyes knows he would have to bring them on and use them carefully but as substitutes Saha and Owen could potentially change games when brought on and we haven't had that for quite some time. How good would it be to go from a 4-5-1 with the Yak up front to go to 4-4-2 taking off Nev and the Yak to be replaced by Saha and Owen with Pienaar-Cahill-Fellaini-Arteta covering midfield?

I for one would like to see this scenario!

Not a chance for me. He is about 2 or 3 seasons past acceptable never mind his best. I don't was starting to attract unwanted press which his signing would bring, its just a pr nightmare waiting to happen and the position of over the hill always injured striker slot is taken by the king! Lol

What record? Take it you dont mean his goalscoring record?

He has scored more than any of our players this season... in a Newcastle side.

Scored his fair share last year too.

Now, if only he could stay fit but in saying that, if he had been continually fit, he would be way out of league.

He has still scored 10 goals this season in a very poor passing Newcastle side.

People were quite happy to sign Saha on a free - from United (probably higher wages) despite his injury list - which is far longer than Owens. Despite Saha having a worse goalscoring record than him!

It does confuse me how you can like one, and not like the other.

Owens recent record

Liverpool 2002/03 54 games, 28 goals
Liverpool 2003/04 38 games, 19 goals
Real Madrid 2004/05 43 games, 16 goals
Newcastle 2005/06 11 games, 7 goals
Newcastle 2006/07 3 games 0 goals
Newcastle 2007/08 31 games, 13 goals
Newcastle 2008/09 29 games, 10 goals

Theory drawn from the above? When Owen plays, he scores - and he plays more than Saha, and indeed, scores more than Saha.

204 goals in 416 games, for a 29 year old English model professional - and people scoff at it immediately. We've come some way under David Moyes and Bill Kenwright. Dickov, Earnshaw or Alan Smith anyone?

Mate , lies , damn lies , and statistics .
Anyone whos watched Owen in Newcastles last three games , their most important in 2 generations , could not fail to agree that the lad is past it . He offers nothing to a game if it is not in the 6 yard box . The sniffer thing is great and all , but even that seems to be waning . Cant beat a man , cant run , cant tackle , no good defensively, , ball control like me Nanna ... need I go on . Nice idea , in 2004/5 maybe .
Not for me , thanks .

Thing is though, he has still scored 10 goals this season... in a poor Newcastle side. So he most offer something to a game? That record is nearly as good as his record for Liverpool in 2003, you could actually argue it to be better considering hes at a club who are 19th in the League.

Have you seen the rest of the players? They are not feeding him in, just hoofing it up. They have useless build up play - rather like we had with Beattie/Johnson.

Its no surprise that majpr pundits where surprised when he wasnt in the England squad, they obviously think he 'still has it' also.

As i said before, i dont know how people can like the signing of Saha, but not this one.

I know, I know. But just out of interest, lets say he is available for the reported £3m and £85,000 a week (say £55,000 and topped up with appearences), would you see that as a good deal?

Nope. All finished, washed up. Not interested in football. Waste of money.

Moving on...
