and this from a player who has been in and out through injury, playing with a [Poor language removed] demotivated newcastle team under three or four different managers, after losing the pace of his younger years.

he's simply world class at putting it in the back of the net.

Big Joe says hes put a bid in for an English left back.

They've offered him a new contract apprantly......

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Newcastle | Owen offered new Magpies contract

England striker Michael Owen a new contract to extend his stay at St James' Park.

Owen's current deal ends in the summer of 2009 - when he could walk away from the Magpies for free.

The 29-year-old has scored 29 goals for Newcastle since joining the club from Real Madrid for £17m in 2005.

Magpies manager Joe Kinnear has already said Owen will not be sold in the January transfer window - even if he cannot agree terms on a new contract.

Owen scored in Newcastle's 3-0 win over Portsmouth on Sunday and Kinnear said afterwards: "Michael knows I want him to stay and we won't be accepting any offers for him.

"There is no point in taking any money for Michael when he can score 15 or 20 goals a season for us."

It is understood the Magpies have presented the terms of the deal to Owen's representatives and are now awaiting their response.

Owen denies links with other clubs

Along with goalkeeper Steve Harper, midfielder Nicky Butt and striker Shola Ameobi, the former Liverpool striker is one of several Newcastle players who are out of contract at the end of the season.

Last week, Kinnear conceded he was not confident of persuading Owen to stay beyond the summer.

"I'm pretty confident about everybody else but Michael is a different kettle of fish," he stated.

Owen has previously pinpointed boardroom "turmoil" as the reason for his delay in agreeing a new contract.

He reiterated his stance on the issue earlier this month, telling BBC Sport: "I haven't spoken to the club about my contract, despite all the speculation in the papers. "I can't do anything until I sit down and start negotiating."

After former manager Kevin Keegan's controversial exit in September, owner Mike Ashley put the Magpies up for sale but has been unable to find a buyer.

"We had a few meetings earlier on in the season and things were going fine," explained Owen.

"Then the manager left - as did someone on the board who we were negotiating with - talks haven't picked up since."

....Whether or not he'll sign is up to him. Didnt they offer him one before but he sent it back due to his wage or was just rumour?

What I found interesting is the other players mentioned who are out of contract.....Steve Harper is a good goalie IMO, always does well when Given was injured to buggery last season. Nicky Butt? I'd take him. Ameobi? Been in a bit of form, not too bad a striker.

I don't think that would make any difference,I know hes a greedy little b*** but getting nearer his home and family will carry more weight although his idea of taking a cut in wages and what we will pay is miles apart knowing Bill, who can say with all honesty we tried to sign him just not hard enough.then again would he have the bottle tom sign for us and upset all thoe loonys across the park:(

When it becomes clear to him that nobody is going to offer him anywhere near the cash he's been offered at Newcastle, and when he realises that the "4" don't want him, watch the greedy little get sign his contract.

I do think he's gotta think long and hard. He's 29 and with Newcastle behind the scenes trouble the team doesnt look to have any future - managers coming and going, a chairmen they dont want, no money, no invester. He's got 2 years of top flight in him IMO and being at Newcastle, it aint top flight.

He signs a contract for 4-5 years (which is pretty much the standard), Newcastle aint gonna make money from him if they want to sell (the older he gets so does his value) in the future, and with the uncertainty over who's gonna buy the club - giving him 90-100k a week will burn a serious hole especially with bottom half finishes 2 seasons on the trot.

But you can see him leaving if Villa or Spurs chip in and pay him close to 70K a week. We cant pay that, Pompey cant pay that, only Villa can for a top 10 team outside the sky 4 year in year out.

So its either Football or coinage for him really.

i realy think this might happen!

no sources or spys just think he would choose us to proove something to his dad!

all my vpoints! lol worked last year! that he is are first signing in jan!

and yes its just a guess!

MICHAEL OWEN is set for an emotional return to Merseyside in the summer, with Everton primed to make him an offer to end his career at Goodison Park.

Owen is heading for Liverpool this weekend as Newcastle face another scrap for points in their fight to avoid relegation, but his return to the city where he became a hero at Anfield may be for the long term.

Newcastle’s temporary boss Alan Shearer, a former England team-mate, would love his star striker to agree a new deal on Tyneside. But

Everton are ready to tempt Owen with a return to his home patch whether or not Newcastle survive in the Premier League.

The crucial factor is timing, with Owen’s Newcastle deal running down to its conclusion this summer. He announced in mid-winter that he would not seek a transfer in the January window but had no intention of signing a new contract for Newcastle until this season ended.

He also insisted his decision had nothing to do with money and claimed he would consider taking a pay cut – a statement that was seen as a carrot both to potential suitors and Newcastle.

I understand Everton will not match Owen’s current deal, worth more than £100,000 a week, but that would not necessarily be a problem for the player. He would almost certainly receive, in addition to his Everton contract, a handsome signing-on fee.

Everton are not cash-laden, and that is why a gamble on injury-plagued Owen is seen as a good bet.

Although he has lost pace and, in recent weeks, his trusty eye for goal, he remains a natural finisher of the highest order.

Everton, unlike Newcastle, boast a side with a good Premier League pedigree. Having such a striker would complement them, if they can keep Owen fit.

It is understood that if Everton follow up their interest, it would intrigue a player who was a fan of theirs as a boy.
Everton tried to sign Owen when Newcastle took him from Real Madrid four years ago and boss David Moyes spoke with him. But they could not compete with Newcastle’s £17million bid.
Now they could effectively get him on a Bosman free, although there may be competition from the considerably richer owners of Manchester City.

But Everton would suit Owen, who often relies on a helicopter when he commutes from his family base in Cheshire.

He would be back to his roots and to his boyhood favourites – the club where his father, Terry, spent some time as a player. And he would be close to the multi-million-pound racehorse facility he opened in 2007. Owen said earlier this campaign: “After speculation about my future at Newcastle, I have decided to make it clear I am committed to the club until at least the end of this season and have informed them I do not want to make a decision about my future until that time.

“I hope this will be seen as a positive step and not as being disloyal in any way.”

He added: “I am committed, along with the rest of the players, to ensure the club end the season on a high.”

Finishing on a high now for Newcastle would be fourth-bottom and an escape from relegation. Whether it is achieved or not, it may be Owen’s last effort for the Toon. ‘I won’t make a decision just yet’
