I think thats completely wrong tbh. If Yakubu has the ball he can make something from 30 yards out. Saha seems to spend all his time on the half way line, not creating anything for himself, but holding the ball up. It would be great in a 4-4-2, sadly he didnt know he was a lone striker in a 4-5-1.

Getting Owen as said before is basically risk free. With Arteta in the Owen and Yakubu will get goals, they make clever runs, and Arteta is clever enough to spot them.

Plus think of our ariel ability in the box with Owen in the team: Cahill, Fellaini, Owen, Yobo, Lescott, Jagielka, with Baines, Pienaar, Neville and Arteta whipping in the crosses.

If anything that shows a hunger to get involved, dropping deep and wanting to make things happen. Whether that's linking things together, holding the ball up or turning at running at opposition players.

Saha does all of this, whether you like him or not that is a fact. As does Yakubu and Jo, they offer far more to the team than goals.

Owen is one dimensional, he's very good at what he does (scoring goals) but beyond that he doesn't offer much else. He isn't going to win long hoofs down the field, he doesn't run the channels and he's not going to come deep and hold the ball up.

How many teams play with out and out poachers nowadays? Not many to be honest. Manchester Utd got rid of one (Ruud VN) and became a far better team because of it. They went for players like Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov and Saha who could score goals aswell as do other jobs.

Owen has to offer more than goals if he is going to be our front man, especially in our formation. You can't just play off the striker as a lone front man.

It is going to be very hard to accommodate him if we sign him in my opinion, that's one thing I'd be worried about if we where to sign him.

Good post, TB. I think you've summed it up well. We all know Owen does well from 6 yards, but then so does Yak (more than Owen) and Saha. If we're paying £50k a week for a striker, plus "generous signing on fee", I want more than Owen can give.

To be honest, I think Jo fits the bill for what we need at this time. He's clinical enough, works midfield, can pass and looks to involve himself away from the penalty area. However, I'm sure we can't afford to bring him here. Another loan would be fantastic, but I'm sure Hughes won't go for that.

Anyway, my worry is getting someone to play right-wing at the moment. After that, I'll worry about right-back. After that, I'm thinking about another goalkeeper. Owen is far from my mind, and I hope Moyes is similarly minded too.

Great post mate, to sum it up, Owen would be shocking playing in a 4-5-1 as lone striker.

The man, the toccy.

Don't forget the boost in shirt sales, and abit more recognition around Europe, every little helps.

Owen's all round game isn't that bad, his linkup play is decent and he does drop off in the same way all good strikers do. You can't argue with his record, when he plays he scores goals. Players like that are always useful in some capacity, look at Pippo.

True, that's why I wouldn't rule him out.

Can't agree with what your saying though, we obviously have different standards of link up play and holding the ball up.

He's average with his back to goal and he isn't one to come looking for the ball.

And he also doesnt have the pace for balls over the top.

Hes a last resort in my eyes. If im honest, I would give Victor another season, than pay any wages to a player whos heart is clearly not in it anymore. And thats irony.
