Excessive over-seeding can give increased germination but not necessarily fruition. It may ultimately give poor returns as your plants compete for resources and crowd each other out. This can lead to issues with lack of exposure to sunlight and disease due to poor ventilation around the plant. Thinning out the seedlings after germination can help with this but can in itself attract pests such as onion or carrot fly so again it is best to sow sparsely and regularly.

A simple program of composting and mulching may well enable your bed to become productive or perhaps choose a different crop more suited to the situation. It could even be that your chosen seeds simply need a longer period to germinate than you initially thought or require cold stratification before waking from dormancy.
