My overriding thoughts whilst watching niche sports in the Olympics is…

How do so many of these guys/gals make a living ? Take a sport like water polo for example, where the hell is the money coming from to pay them a living wage ?

No one watches the sport, it doesn’t get televised on any meaningful channels so how is anyone making money from it ?

Same goes for countless Olympic sports, I just don’t get how you make a living from sports which no one watches and thus generate no money.

Is it all just government funded purely for the sake of the olympics coming around every four years ?

Waterpolo is relatively popular in Southern Europe and Balkans and from what i understand as college sport in USA. There are professional leagues and Champions League and everything and pretty much entire country here (Croatia) watch during big competitions. I dont know about wages but i assume they are pretty low, though sure as hell sport is good if you want hunky body and build your muscles, they all look like Greek Gods.

But anyway i played it doing summer (amateur tournaments) and is extremally exhausting sport.
Handball is another popular sport in Europe (though on much, much bigger level than waterpolo) that doesn't exist in your country. Though unlike waterpolo, handball is very much popular as spectator sport here and in countries where is popular (Germany, Scandinavia, Spain etc...).

Interestingly when thinking about it, football is like only sport that connects you with rest of Europe, pretty much nobody in Europe cares or play sports that are popular in UK like cricket and rugby (expect France and rugby) while nobody in UK cares for sports that are popular in various parts of Europe (basketball, handball, hockey). While rugby is relatively known here (though majority are confusing it with American football), most people got no idea what cricket even is.

What would the outcry have been if something from the Islamic faith was mocked? It wouldn’t have flown at all. But they had no problem in mocking Christianity.
