Paulo Fonseca

Eddie Howe is a manager who likes the plaudits he gets from managers like Klopp for rolling over and getting battered.

This was significant and shockingly lowered my opinion of him (which was not very high anyway). He seems a weak character, as indicated by his failure at Burnley, and I doubt he could cope with the pressure-cooker that is EFC. Grovelling before Klopp was appalling...

Fonseca I’d have. But I’d rather Eddie Howe

You’ll get slaughtered for this mate as he hasn’t proven himself in some rubbish league abroad like Felix Magath, Pepe Mel, Juande Ramos, Christian Gross, Jaques Santini, Remi Garde, Alain Perrin, Francesco Guidelin, Walter Mazzari, etc etc.

The top teams take the top foreign managers like Mourinho, Pep, Conte etc. Proven winners of major tournaments.

The also rans (like us) have to realise that someone like Fonseca is a massive punt, who would be way way more likely to join the first list, rather than the latter.

Sorry I will take a guy who took a team from Urkaine to second in the champions league group stage that consisted of City and Napoli. Then only lost on away goals to Roma in the round of 16, who went all the way to the semi final and only lost that 7-6 to Liverpool. I think this forum would go nuts to get a manager to do that with the Everton badge on his shirt.

I’d take him too, but it’s a total roll of the dice in all honesty.

It’s not just about the manager though. Shakhtar were an established force in their league (essentially two teams, them and Dynamo Kiev). They’ve had a very successful transfer strategy established for decades as well- buy South American talent and sell for profit. They’ve got a great reputation for that. Our infrastructure is nowhere near as established or successful.

The guy has done a good job. I would argue though that he hasn’t done much more than you’d expect of him. Shakhtar regularly progress through the group stages of the champions league, he didn’t do anything unusual there. He also didn’t have a great time at Porto either. He’s not the finished article IMO.

Yeah your right, should go for someone who hasn't proven himself in any leauge

Worked for Barca and Real I guess. I think you missed the point though.

Apart from proving themselves at those clubs with the b team?

Teams like barca, real and bayern don't really count with managerial appointments. They can take risks hire nobody's and at the very least will come second in their league and still have the best managers and players in the world lining up to join them.

Fans want to feel like the club has ambition and to project to the world we have ambition. If we got a manager like fonseca, young, ambitious, plays attractive football, highly regarded by the top managers in the world and has actually won things. The rest of the world would take notice. If we got someone like Eddie howe we'd be lucky to get a mention on sky sports.
