Phil Jagielka

He's crap davek said. We need someone who can bring the ball out like Beckenbauer, never mind all this old fashioned defending stuff

Typical daily mail rating. Do they even watch the game or just get the nearest kopite they can find to judge the players? 'Jags 5, Gerrard 8.5 motm', 'No Aldo, Stevie isn't playing anymore', 'oh, Henderson 7.....'

Played well, but nowhere near the key moment when Pelle got across him for that goal.

I think that sums up a lot of his season for us.

What annoys me is how Gary Cahill is being treated as a cut above Jagielka and like a new Bobby Moore. This is a lad who's been left out of the Chelsea team this season for an over the hill John Terry and at times a 19 year old Zouma.

He has made numerous cock ups for England (remember Kenny Miller mugging him off for Scotland). Not only that, he had an appalling world cup yet it was Jagielka (who was also awful) who was singularly scapegoated. (Suarez's second goal was the fault of Gerrard but secondly blame should have been Cahills as the covering man not Jagielka).

Now we have articles debating who should be his next partner like he's an inked in performer. He like Jagielka is a limited defender at the top level but the best we have.

As for Jagielka I think people have to concede that at the start of this season he was awful. Perhaps more importantly and what davek is getting at is the lack of leadership from him. Players were close to being in open revolt. Whatever people think of Neville as a captain, he would never have allowed that and I think Jagielka didn't close ranks enough when needed.

Having said that his form has got better this season. As a last ditch defender he is still very good and he is still quick and courageous. Alongside a thinking defender like Stones (but not a Cahill) he looks much better. He is not a natural captain for me though. He just seems to much of a nice guy. I think someone like McCarthy needs to take over the captaincy.

He's definitely not a captain. How he got given the armband is a mystery - probably: "Oh he's a CB and he's been here a few seasons, and senior CBs usually get it, so...".

Performance wise though he has these chicken with no head spells in him every season now. He's a useless organiser from set pieces (goes back partly to captaincy issue) and the feller looks like Bambi on ice when he has the ball at his feet trying to move it out of defence (that moment last night when he tried to 'surge' from his own half into the Italian half and fell over himself!).

He is what he is, IMO: an old fashioned shot stopper who can lunge to charge down shots in his own box.

.......disagree with the 'he's definitely not a captain' quote. Captain's don't have to be shouting and in your face. Brian Labone and Kevin Ratcliffe were not that type. I think Jagielka is a top pro and I get the impression he's respected at both club and international level. I suspect he's the type who has a real influence, when he talks people listen. He's also a fine ambassador for our club in the way he behaves on and off the pitch.
