Phil Jagielka

But he's 32. Even if we don't "do a Distin", he's still got 2 years at the very top left at least. Look at John Terry, playing out of his skin at 34. There are far more pressing issues which need financial focus than replacing our form player of the last 4 months.

What's more confusing is that you want to replace him with another "bruiser" rather than a ball player. So you want to replace Jagielka with another Jagielka?

It's a crying shame that you can't even admit how good he's been both for the entire or last season, and since Christmas of this. Look at his partnership with Stones. Is that all of stones doing?

Credit where credits due, for Christ sake .
In a word, yes.

It is no coincidence that Jagielka's recent upturn in form - and it IS recent, because he was par tosh from August until February - has come at exactly the same time that Stones has settled into a prolonged run of games.

Credit where credit is due, indeed.

His age isn't the issue. My problem is with his distribution, and the fact that Everton are constantly vulnerable to something as simple as a punt into the box.

Kompany has struggled because he and Mangala don't complement each other whatsoever, and he also seems to be injured a lot. I imagine City will stick with him a bit longer, though, seeing as he's captained them to two titles in four years.

His pass succession rate in the league this season is 87% only slightly down on John Terry's 89%, that's a direct comparison between one player you think is good in possession and another who you don't. Both play in the same position but ones played with a regular partner all season in the champion winning team and the others was out of form for the early part of the season and the teams generally struggled as have most of defensive partners.

Not bad all considered I'm sure you'll agree?

Sounds fantastic.

However, I've watched Phil Jagielka play live for eight years now, and I can say with confidence that anything more than a simple pass to a nearby teammate is generally beyond him.

Anyway, that's enough criticism for today. I actually consider him to be the best centre half I've seen at Everton, and I don't enjoy slagging him off.

Nothing to do with having zero cover in front of him? Barry being plop and McCarthy injured.

Certain aspects of his poor overall play can be attributed to inconsistent performances from the defensive midfielders, yes. But are they the reason that Jags is useless at defending crosses and high balls into the box? Nope. Are they the reason he is a woeful captain? Nope.

Too many on here have allowed the fact that Jags has scored a couple of goals this season (including the stunner against the RS) to cloud their judgement regarding his defensive frailties. He has largely been mince this year, and I fear the end is nigh.

Why do you call him a usless captain? And what do you think his defensive frailties are?

And some merely listen to darek rather, recycle the generic without ever being substantive with their criticism...

You don't like many players at Everton do you.

I don't think I've ever seen a goalkeeper get fooled so easily as Robles did for the goal last night.

Hopefully the last we've seen of this imbecile.

On Robles

Never really liked him.

True story.

On Tim Cahill

I think I'm pretty much set on wanting him gone now.

On Martinez

Funny how Lennon was always one of the names wheeled out when talking about how crap Sterling is going to be.

On Lennon

Reminds me of Shaun Goater.

On Lukaku

No one better at making saves that don't require you to move your feet.

Shame he's comically bad at everything else.

On Howard

Many others on McGeady, Osman, Hibbert, Distin, Mirallas, Baines. Just couldn't be bothered to put them in. You like a good moan at our players like. Well in.

Moaning at our players is a laugh if they're crap.

What part of "he is useless at defending crosses and high balls into the box" did you fail to find substantive? It's a pretty specific statement.

For evidence, you could start off by referring to Benteke's first goal for Villa in our last game. Forgive me but I can't immediately find a video of it.

You could go back as far as Van Wolfswinkel's goal for Norwich back in August 2013:

There are plenty of other examples between those two games. He's never been much cop in the air in defensive situations.
