Playing as good as any central defender in the league at the moment, bar John Terry.

Yes - absolutely, phase him out

He's the leader of a defence which has been woeful for the vast majority of the season.

If people think he's second only to John Terry then I really don't know what else to say.

He said at the moment. Jagielka has been playing very well for a quite a few games now.

Ah, I didn't realise he was being so time specific.

Liverpool fans tried the same trick last year when Messi was injured. 'Right at this exact second, lad, Suarez is better than Messi.'

Surely, SURELY you can appreciate that Jagielka is playing very, very well at the moment.

And "vast majority" is an exaggeration. He had a poor start and was shaky until Christmas time. This calendar year he has been consistent, and in the last two months he has been our best player.

NEA if you can't see that or choose to not want to. Is your answer a championship-level "ball-playing" centre-half from Celtic too? Makes sense.

Good for another season at least. But does need an actual defender next to him as per Stones rather than Distin/Alcaraz. Needs Tim Howard in the bin as well, not fair to have that utter clown playing behind our defence

He is a bit boss. £4 million we paid for him. Top signing.
He's not had the best of seasons, but not many in the entire squad have. In the mainstay though he's been a top defender for us.

In fact when he eventually stops playing, and with the wonders of hindsight, he'll probably be viewed as one our best centre backs in many a year.

He was a great defender for a long time, but he isn't nearly as dominant as he once was, and I think Martinez should be looking to identify his replacement. Better than just running him into the ground to the point where he's worthless, like we did with Distin.

And as for snide van Dijk remark, I think we need some big dirty [Poor language removed] to play next to Stones. I'm not the football hipster I once was, but I did want Godin before he left Villarreal, so someone of that ilk would do me just fine.

But he's 32. Even if we don't "do a Distin", he's still got 2 years at the very top left at least. Look at John Terry, playing out of his skin at 34. There are far more pressing issues which need financial focus than replacing our form player of the last 4 months.

What's more confusing is that you want to replace him with another "bruiser" rather than a ball player. So you want to replace Jagielka with another Jagielka?

It's a crying shame that you can't even admit how good he's been both for the entire or last season, and since Christmas of this. Look at his partnership with Stones. Is that all of stones doing?

Credit where credits due, for Christ sake .

I don't know why you keep comparing him to John Terry. They're not even in the same bracket.

Just because a defender is physical doesn't mean he has to knock aimless punts into the Bullens. Terry, Adams, Stam, Ramos, Lucio, Kompany, Campbell, King, Woodgate... All big ball-winners, and all comfortable in possession.

I've been a fan of Jagielka for years, but both he and Howard have done terrible jobs of marshalling the defence this season - all teams have to do is stick it in the mixer and there's a good chance something will drop - and the recent spell of good form before lapsing again at Villa doesn't change that.

I use Terry as a mere reference to your earlier point about phasing Jagielka out because of his age. Terry is better than Jagielka, but that doesn't mean that all those who aren't as brilliant as Terry aren't good enough and need dumping on the scrap heap.

And recent spell? You're again, on purpose id guess, ignoring my earlier point that last season and for half of this he's been fantastic. So using the last two seasons as a whole, he's had a poor quarter which coincides with the loss of form/injuries to other players like Barry, Coleman, McCarthy, Barkley, Pienaar...its all linked. If we aren't playing well up top or in midfield, teams will come at us, put us under pressure and force errors which in turn deteriorates confidence. Self perpetuating. What central defender would in the league could withstand that much pressure running at him in waves, with no protection, game after game? Kompany has gone through through the exact same this season. Is he cack too? Phase him out?

His age isn't the issue. My problem is with his distribution, and the fact that Everton are constantly vulnerable to something as simple as a punt into the box.

Kompany has struggled because he and Mangala don't complement each other whatsoever, and he also seems to be injured a lot. I imagine City will stick with him a bit longer, though, seeing as he's captained them to two titles in four years.
