Phil Jagielka

If Moyes had been let loose on Stones he'd have had him hoofing the ball 200 foot in the air.

Moyes = agricultural/crude
Maetinez - cultured/refined

.....I think that's a little unfair, we did transition into a side that played some decent footy with Moyes. Pienaar/Baines combo etc, some tiki taki stuff.

I know which one I prefer.
TBF, Caldwell provided the meat and potato element in a back three.

Not enough football though. Moyes was a cautious, negative manager who wanted to go front to back quickly most of the time.

In the recent past we've had two no-nonsense CBs in the shape of Jagielka/Distin. That's changed now to stopper+distributor in the shape of Jagielka and Stones. Imo, to suit Martinez's game-plan better, we need to have another ball playing CB who can slot in with Stones when we face certain types of opposition who present us with a different type of threat.

There's an evolution away from the Moyes type of CD unit that'll be for the better of our play. Yes retain Jagielka, but let's make him one of three realistic starters.
Id agree we certainly need to sign at least 1 centre back.probably 2 in the summer.You seem to want a mixture of snarling up and at em warrior and a silky smooth ball player.thats some player dave.no1 springs to mind to be honest mate

No, I'm just saying whereas this season we had no real option to break the deadlock off the bench (deadlock in terms of style of CD unit we want) as Distin was overlooked and Alcarez is dire, we need to get a ratio of 2:1 next season in favour of distributors(2)/stopper(1). I think Jagielka will be crucial in certain games where we know we'll need his scrambling ability, but in other games it'd make more sense playing two CBs more comfortable on the ball. Personally I'd bid for Van Dijk. He's very combative but can really step out with the ball. Him and Stones would be a dream CB partnership.

Good shout mate. I'd like to see our centre midfielders rotated a bit more as well depending on the opposition. Bobby seems obsessed with 2 defensive mids no matter who we play against

I am no Moyes defender but he had us playing some really good stuff at times, fullbacks overlapping and playing one twos with the wingers into the box etc.

His main problem was his utter cowardice in big matches and tendency to revert to 4-6-0 at the first sign of attacking intent from opposition or when we went 1 goal up.

Yep. And I think the two issues (CB and CM) affect each other.

Key words.

He brought very good players in and didn't let them play. Speaking generally.
