Phil Jagielka

Fair play. Been immense of late, definite goal of the season as well. Hopefully we're seeing him grow into the role of captain. There's no doubting his ability; probably the best CB we've had in the past 2 decades, to be honest.

Though I think Stones will have something to say about that!

And will only be hitting 33 come start of next season, half people on here already wanting a replacement. but 33 for a cb just aint that bad, he def got a good year or even 2 left in him and especially when partnering a youngster like stones! the experience he’ll learn off jags is second to none and i bet he’d say that himself!!

In a word, yes.

It is no coincidence that Jagielka's recent upturn in form - and it IS recent, because he was par tosh from August until February - has come at exactly the same time that Stones has settled into a prolonged run of games.

Credit where credit is due, indeed.

Certain aspects of his poor overall play can be attributed to inconsistent performances from the defensive midfielders, yes. But are they the reason that Jags is useless at defending crosses and high balls into the box? Nope. Are they the reason he is a woeful captain? Nope.

Too many on here have allowed the fact that Jags has scored a couple of goals this season (including the stunner against the RS) to cloud their judgement regarding his defensive frailties. He has largely been mince this year, and I fear the end is nigh.

What part of "he is useless at defending crosses and high balls into the box" did you fail to find substantive? It's a pretty specific statement.

For evidence, you could start off by referring to Benteke's first goal for Villa in our last game. Forgive me but I can't immediately find a video of it.

You could go back as far as Van Wolfswinkel's goal for Norwich back in August 2013:

There are plenty of other examples between those two games. He's never been much cop in the air in defensive situations.

Seems there are quite a few that disagree with you on this...

Everyone is entitled to an opinion mate. Mine is that we've had a truly woeful season when you look specifically at our defence: Jags is a part of that.

I defy anyone to keep a straight face and say he played well at any point between August and January (at least). I will credit him for his improvement in the last couple months, but no way does he deserve player of the season over Lukaku. Fair enough for goal of the season though, none of us will forget that rocket for a few years!

....ironic all of the early season posts that he was finished. Never a doubt, top defender, top professional, top captain.
He has a terrible prolonged period of games each season now. Is it acceptable that he turns up and starts playing well again just before Christmas? I dont think we can afford it, tbh.

For me, he's an old fashioned meat and potato pie no nonsense player. Very limited for the sort of game we want to play.
